I want to go to an undergraduate business school (Wharton, Kelley, etc)…but I’m discouraged by one thing. In my microeconomis class, I got an 86% quarter grade last quarter, and I currently have a 90% this quarter. If I get an A on the next test, and and A on the final, I think I will be able to get an A…BUT I might also get a B+…
I feel like it looks bad to be applying to an undergraduate business school, yet having got a B in Econ (and probably a 3 on the AP test). Would this look bad to them?
And I don’t really enjoy Econ either. I don’t know if this is bc I really don’t like it or because I don’t like it bc it’s hard and I have a B. But I keep talking myself, most business schools don’t even have Economics in them. Doesn’t that mean that my not having an affinity to Econ won’t hinder the prospects of an undergraduate business school??
Is it stupid to pursue business if I dislike Econ? And I find Econ hard too.
Note: my want to go to an undergraduate business school is new, I previously wanted to do pre-med. I feel like I’m in love with this possible path!! But I just keep thinking about my problem with Econ…ughhhhhh
I can’t opine on your chances for a prestige undergrad biz school, but I can say that you don’t have to love Econ to be a good business major or future business person. You have to understand the factors that drive an economy, an industry and how your company/business ‘fits’ into that bigger picture - but your day to day job could be anything from human resources development to sales to operations mgt. As long as you ‘get’ the underlying economic concepts, you’ll be fine. Also, don’t judge Econ on the basis on your high school class in that subject. I hated my first Econ class in college - the prof kept using sports metaphors which I didn’t get. I dropped Econ - and never took another Econ class. Fast forward - MBA and successful business career. I love Econ, especially economic history, and read it for pleasure. Now that I understand how it drives the world, it makes so much more sense.
Economics is related to but ultimately different from the study of business at a b-school. Economics is a liberal arts major in college and can be pretty theoretical especially at the upper levels. Business is the study of a specific business major with a core curriculum in a variety of other business disciplines such as accounting, finance, IT, marketing etc… You do generally have to take two economics courses (micro and macro) in a business program. You can be successful in a business school and not love economics.
How will schools look at a B in Economics? Probably the same as they would look at a B in any AP course. Only people who work in admissions at the particular schools you are interested in know for sure.
I hate Econ, and went to Ross (Michigan). You will likely like some of your business classes and not others. Hating Econ isn’t an indication that you aren’t cut out for a business major.
