Is it to late to save my future ?

Okay , I'm about to become a junior and I'm really unsettled about my college opportunity . Since Junior year is were you start deciding what schools you want to apply and go to , I'm currently In a predicament where I'd probably be stuck going to a school I don't want to go to (or a community college)

My school doesn't have much things that interest me nor I feel is worth while because everything is sports . So I haven't gotten into any school activities . I was on track during my sophomore year for like 3 weeks , but it probably doesn't even count as being in activity since I quit the team (I didn't enjoy it) . I wanted to try out for basketball but The coach already had his team together and only took two more girls , I didn't get on the team .

My first quarter I failed Religion, AP world history, and Geometry . But over the year I took all my time and worked hard so that I could get my grades up and I ended the year with a 3.1 GPA. My freshman year I had a 3.5 Average. My freshmen year I failed no classes , and i feel with my sophomore year I went in unprepared and I stumbled. I have a lot of absences as well due to medical reasons , but as of this year I will definitely try to be at school even if it means being sick .

Since I haven't done anything during school I have been into a lot of fashion so I blog and I actually make a some clothing and stuff on my sewing machine (maybe even sell them) . I draw in my free time (school doesn't have an art club) . And I'm currently working on getting a fashion line going (Or atleast professionally get my stuff out there) Idk if any or his stuff counts as EC on a college app but I want colleges to know I have skills and I don't waste my time doing nothing. I haven't done much volunteer work but I'm willing to do so if I'tll increase my chances of getting into a good school.

I haven't gotten a job neither of these summers because it seems like no one is hiring in NY (which is crazy since I live in a city). And to be honest it discourages me. I will try to get a job during the school year and if I don't I'm going to apply for an internship.

I would like to go to college and study business (entrepreneurship) , I was thinking maybe Syracuse , Boston University , Georgia tech , Georgia State, Indiana , la Salle , Louisville ,

All because I hear they have great business/entrepreneurship programs , I'll research them some more but I Know Georgia State , Indiana , and Syracuse are my schools I'm really trying to go to .

Any help / advice / suggestions on my situation would be greatly appreciated , I certainly need some guidance so I can save myself , I really expect more of myself and I don't want a couple of bad years to ruin my future .

Thanks in Advance :D :)

Focus on your Jr year academics, don’t get a job job unless you have to because your family finances require it. Your Jr year is very important for you to show that you have got past a rocky period and get that gpa up if you have hopes at some of the schools you mention that are competitive. I hope your transcripts are for semester grades only and that you will have no F’s showing as that will hurt.

Jr year you will also be preparing for the SAT’s in spring so you need time for that. Good SAT’s can only help you.

Your EC’s in fashion, art and writing are something you can develop. You can take outside classes to show commitment. You can look into internships for the school year if commitment isn’t too many hours, but try to line up something for next summer.

It is good to show some involvement and commitment to your community, at school or in form of volunteering. It isn’t necessary to do volunteer hours, though. Doesn’t your school have theater, perhaps you could get involved with costuming for productions? Or other behind the scenes work. Surely sports is not the only thing students get involved in.

Just want to say one thing: There’s absolutely nothing wrong with going to a Community College. :]

save $ go to CC and get high gpa

In short: No, it isn’t too late. I’ll give you target scores instead.

Syracuse: Aim for 1850+/28+
BU: Aim for 29+/2000+
GA Tech: Reach (aim for 29+/2000+ regardless)
GA State: Aim for 26+/1800+
IU: Aim for 25+/1750+ (do your best at IU so that you can attend Kelley, since direct admission is out of the question)
LaSalle: Aim for 25+/1750+
Louisville: Aim for 25+/1750+

What’s your problem with Baruch?

I don’t feel like there is anything wrong with Community College, I just think that maybe jobs and things I do after college would be taken more seriously if I have a degree from a university , rather than community college (that may be a little naive but business seems to be a situation were you would always want to look top notch and have an advantage) [kimikochan]

Thank you very much for the advice and internship suggestions , I greatly appreciate you taking the time out of your day to give me some pointers.
My school does have a drama club , but they usually allow students to get/make their own costumes. My team has a few dance clubs , and next year they will be having a school news paper . I think I would get into the school newspaper because I enjoy writing and I would enjoy the experience . [BrownParent]

Due to the situation I’m currently in regarding school I think Baruch is out of my league [Catria]

BVP the most common course is not to graduate from a CC, a lot don’t even have 4 year programs to graduate from, but to transfer from the CC to a 4 year university. Your degree is from whatever the university you go to is.

So , if I happen to transfer from a CC to a university , how exactly do you get scholarships or how do you get a resume that looks good ? Is it all just grades ? Like do you do volunteer work and things outside of school as you do in high school ? [Etuck24]

You don’t have to consider CC, there’s plenty of colleges that almost everyone can get into in which you will have a good college experience at. ASU, WVU, UCF…to name a few.

Baruch is easier to get into than Georgia Tech and Boston University…

In NY State, there are many schools where you could go. Check out the SUNY’s including the SUNY colleges.
Then, find OOS private schools that offer your intended major and join their mailing list. It’s offered at schools as diverse as Juniata, Nebraska Wesleyan, Northeastern, or Belmont.

Even if the drama club allows students to make their own costumes, do you really think that if you offered the actors to make those costumes for them, you wouldn’t have a few who’d say yes? There’s no downside to asking. :)

Also, how much can your parents pay?
If you have financial need, out of state publics are your worst choice (they will not meet financial need). Your best bet is either your state university or a college where you’re among the top applicants, especially if you bring diversity (not many NY residents apply to schools in Minnesota, Missouri, New Mexico or Alabama, for example).
A good summary about scholarships:

Thank you for the advice . i havent looked into many instate schools other than Syracuse but i’ll look for other schools in NY . i’ll weigh my options .

Well I don’t think my family is in the best financial situation right now so I’m basically trying to get as much financial Aid as possible ! I don’t want to take a student loan cause I hear horror stories of being forever in debt paying it off so I’m trying to avoid that as much as possible .

I think my artistic creativity and imaginative mind bring diversity . I can also dance and I used to play the Piano as a kid (it’s been a long time so I probably have to refine those skills). I think I’m really talented but I just haven’t had much opportunity to use my assets and being shy doesn’t help , I have had a hard time breaking my outer shell .

I will be practicing SAT stuff for the rest of my summer, hopefully take a SAT prep class during the year , and try to use time more wisely , I’m trying to become a better student right now . And trying to get my life together and put myself in the best situation for a great future in whatever I do .
