Is it too late to apply for financial aid?

I forgot to apply and already been accepted to college. I’m a transfer student.

Did you fill out the FAFSA form and submit it by the deadline? The deadline depends on the state of legal residence.
https://fafsa.ed.gov/deadlines.htm#

It is not too late to file FAFSA, and you’d get any Pell grant and the loans. The school can set any deadline for its own funds.

How does fasfa work?

Under What is your state of legal residence? Do I put New York? I’m a resident living here for five years. If I get accepted to Penn State and attend there do i file under New York deadline or Pennsylvania deadline?

New York resident.

Any deadlines are set by the school, not the state.

Call the FinAid Dept. They may have advice or pointers or can flag your file, etc. Meanwhile complete the FAFSA asap.

The fafsa “deadlines” on the fafsa website are meaningless for school based aid.

The deadlines ON the college websites are what you want to look at…so go there.

You can file a 2017-2018 fafsa any time during that academic year, and get the Direct Loan, and any part of the Pell to which you are entitled.

For school based aid…it is highly likely you missed the deadlines for school based aid.

Why didn’t you apply for aid if you needed it??

As an aside…Penn State is going to be unaffordable for you if you can’t pay a huge amount. You are an OOS student, and you are a transfer. I’d wager, the only aid you will see is the Direct Loan…and any Pell you are eligible for.

You say your parents will pay $20,000 a year? If so…go instate in NY…which is within the budget.

There is a deadline to file FAFSA and apply for state aid in PA of May 1, but that only applies to PA residents. You are living in NY and won’t qualify for PA state grant. I don’t know what the deadline for NYS aid is, but I think you have to attend a NYS school, also FAFSA EFC has to be pretty low I believe.

Do,you qualify for NY TAP?

Again…why didn’t you apply when you did your applications for admission? Did you have a plan to pay for college? I’m sorry…but “forgetting” just doesn’t sound likely.

Also, you say elsewhere that your parent works for a university. Does that parent have a tuition benefit of any sort that you could have used?

You also say that your parents can pay $20,000 a year and will take loans out for,the other part of the cost if you go,to Penn State. You do realize that will be close to $100,000 in loans, right?

@thumper1 The $20k per year is the tuition benefit from parent’s job.

It does seem odd that the OP forgot to apply for FA since he’s frequently on CC and the subject of FA/FAFSA comes up constantly…

Well then…Penn State is not in that budget. And borrowing an additional $25,000 a year for Penn State…is excessive, in my opinion.

You’re a NYS resident, right? When you file the FAFSA, look for the link to the NYS TAP application at the end. If your parents’ gross income is less than ~$60k, you may qualify for a federal Pell grant. If their gross is less than ~$80k, you may qualify for a NYS Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) grant.

How much aid do you need to afford the SUNYs? You get up to ~$16k for tuition from Colgate because your dad works there, right? Since SUNY tuition is only about ~$8k, I’m not sure you’d be awarded a TAP grant even if your family income makes you eligible because it looks like your tuition would be covered. Your net cost after the Colgate grant would be ~$12k, but if you file the FAFSA you can borrow $7500/year as a junior and senior. That leaves you ~$4500 to cover. Can your parents pay that? If not, you could probably earn ~$3k if you work during the summer. File both applications, though, and see what happens.

This is for UB right? Check here for info. I think you can file the FAFSA anytime before June 1st. Just make sure to look for the link to the TAP application at the end. The FAFSA app is here. The TAP app can be found here. I don’t know if Buffalo offers transfer grants, but Pell is a federal entitlement. If you qualify for it, you’ll get it. And you can take the $7500/year loan if you file the FAFSA, so I’d file it.

My parents told me to wait before I can apply for FASFA. They want to make sure how much Colgate will pay for my school. I have no idea when will I know the cost. Hopefully, before I hear back from Penn State in May. If I get accepted to Penn State and it doesn’t work out then I’m fine going to a SUNY school. Although It will be a tough choice to choose from.

University at Buffalo: Chemistry
University at Albany: Atmospheric Science and Chemistry
Utica College: Chemistry with concentration in Biochemistry

OOS Tuition and room and board are bout $44,000 a year THIS year at Penn State.

SUNY Albany instate tuition and room and board are bout $22,000 this year.

Penn State is DOUBLE the cost of the NY colleges.

You are asking your family to assume about $25,000 per year in debt for Penn State and that is assuming that Colgate pays $20,000 a year.

How much can your parents pay per year without borrowing? The Colgate benefits page set a cap of ~$16k/year, didn’t it? I’d file the FAFSA as soon as possible. I don’t see how it can hurt.

this makes no sense.

And since you’re a current college student, not a high school student, and you spend a good bit of time on CC, I’m surprised that you didn’t realize that.

Yes, unfortunately, I guess that’s why my parents didn’t file one out for this coming year. However, they did file for Fall 2016 and Spring 2017.
