Is it too late to apply for financial aid?

So…do the fafsa tomorrow. It should,be VERY easy as it uses the same 2015 income data you had for the one your parents already did.

Just go to,the 2017-2018 fafsa. Indicate it is a renewal. Your demographic info will port over. you will,have to hand enter the income data because the IRS data retrieval tool is down…and will be for several weeks.

(Another reason why putting this off was not such. Good idea).

Request a tax transcript as well…just in case you need it.

Colgate’s [employee policy](Offices, Centers, & Institutes | Colgate University) says they’ll pay tuition and fees only at another college, but the amount is capped at 1/2 of Colgate’s annual tuition. Since their tuition is $48k, they should pay the entire $8k tuition at UB (making your net cost $14k) and $24k at Penn State (making your net cost $26k). Can your parents pay $26k without borrowing? If not, you’re likely looking at $50-75k of loans plus interest for 2-3 years at Penn State. That’s way too much.

What does net cost mean? I’m not sure they said they would take out loans. They will support me and if I choose Penn State then I guess they’ll be taking out loans. All they want is for me to feel confident and comfortable. As my mom says, “if I don’t get in to penn state, there’s always graduate school.” Let’s see how things go. I will wait until May and hear from them.

Question: Since I got accepted to Ualbany, how do I tell them to extend my deadline of deposit?

Net cost is why YOU and your family need to pay after all aid is subtracted from the cost of attendance.

You shouldn’t have to commit to Albany until the May 1 deadline for admissions.

So regardless where I go, SUNY or penn State. My parents have to take out loans?

I won’t hear back from Penn State until May. That’s why I’m wondering how I can email and tell Albany if they can extend my deadline

There is a HUGE difference between $4500 a year in loans, and $24,000 a year in loans.

HUGE.

So is SUNY system becoming the next UCs and Pennsylvania? The amount of increase tutuion is rising. I won’t be shocked if UB tuition will be $30,000 in-state in 2019 or 2020

@NASA2014

The tuition at SUNY Buffalo is under $9000 a year. It isn’t going to triple in three years.

The tuition cost right now at Penn State for OOS students…like you…is $32,000 or so.

Not sure what your post 25 is driving at. Your numbers for SUNY Buffalo are WAYYYYYY off.

Penn State is a public school in another state. They probably will offer the $7,500 student loan and Parent Plus loans.

They might also not accept all of your transfer credits.

If you qualify for Pell then you would get that, but you probably didn’t. What was the EFC on the 2016/17 FAFSA?

You can most likely deposit at U Albany and then withdraw if something else is affordable. Since transfer admissions follow a different timeline, does the May 1 deadline apply?

Did you do the net price calculator on the PSU page with your EFC?

PSU University Park’s upper division science OOS tuition and mandatory fees is about $36,000 right now. You need to find out how much the tuition benefit of your dad’s would cover.

Then you would need to see how much off campus rent, utilities, food would be a year. Probably $8-10k.

You can borrow $7,500. Maybe work and earn $3,000. The rest you would need from your parents.

The SUNYs cost ~$22k/year. Tuition is ~$8k. If Colgate pays that you have ~$14k to cover. If you file the FAFSA, you can borrow $7500/year as a junior and senior. That brings the gap down to $6500. If you work summers, you can probably earn $3k. That leaves ~$3500 you need to cover. Can your parents pay that? You’ll also need money for travel and expenses during the year.

What’s your FAFSA EFC? If it’s under $5k, you may qualify for a federal Pell grant and/or a NYS TAP grant.

Can you attend Colgate for free?

@TQfromtheU

He would have needed to apply to and get accepted at Colgate. He has a 2.7 GPA in college so far…which would make acceptance to Colgate a bit of a challenge as a transfer.

He has been accepted to SUNY Buffalo and Albany, I believe. Those will be a LOT less costly with a LOT less loans than Penn State.

I was also accepted to Utica college. My mom said that If I get rejected to Penn State, I will have to attend SUNY Albany. All it matters is that I continue to study and if I stop then all the work I’ve done was for nothing. My mom says I could apply to Penn State for Spring 2018 if I don’t like Albany :slight_smile:

How many years have you been at your current school? Two years?
Your GPA would have to increase in order to be accepted next year, if not this year.

The cost of Penn State is NOT going to be less if ypunapply spring 2018.

If you are currently a second year student, you may find that schools won’t admit you with more than a certain number of credits as a transfer…OR if they do, you will,still be required to complete the courses for your major at THEIR school…because THEIR name will be on the diploma.

And you don’t want to keep transferring and then transferring again.

Pick a four year school from those to which you got accepted…and go and get your bachelors degree.

OP- everyone is being diplomatic but I’ll ask straight out- what’s up with all the transferring, and if your plan was to transfer why do you have a 2.7 GPA? And what’s wrong with SUNY Albany?

What’s really going on here? Your story makes no sense…

If your parent works for Colgate, the tuition benefit is as follows:

Colgate’s current tuition is $51,635

http://www.colgate.edu/admission-financial-aid/tuition-and-fees

if your tuition benefit is half, then they will pay up to $25,817.50 everything over this is on your parents.

OOS tuition at Penn State University Park is $32,382 (- $25,817.50) = $6, 554.50 + room board

(range $12,230 - $ 15,230)

http://admissions.psu.edu/costs-aid/tuition/

Tuition at Utica $19, 446 (your tuition would be covered under Colgate’s plan). You would have fees, room and board. However, I would not choose Utica over Albany

@blossom, NASA2014 has a learning disorder like my youngest. They can be very smart, but it can take time to figure out the right accommodations. OP seems like a serious, dedicated student. If he’s struggled in a few courses, I don’t think it’s from lack of trying.

@Nasa2014, I would attend a SUNY and stay there. If you haven’t used Colgate’s tuition benefit yet, you may be able to spread out your studies at a SUNY. If I remember correctly, they pay for 8 semesters of undergrad. If you want to take 4 classes/semester and graduate in 3 years instead of 2, your parents can probably afford to do that at a SUNY with Colgate’s help. I don’t think that would be an option at Penn State or Utica.

How long have you been at your cc? If you fail a course there, you can add a semester or two without too much financial damage. If you fail a course at Penn State or Utica, you’re likely looking at a very costly extra semester.

@austinmshauri

Colgate will pay for up to 7 years from date of enrollment :slight_smile:
