I’m a graduate of Utica College and have a son at Penn State. Penn State is a HUGE school and not necessarily the best place for a youngster with a learning disorder. UB and Albany are both fairly sizable, very good schools that are reasonably priced for NYS residents (great options for the price!). Colgate is definitely a reach with current GPA. A plug for my alma mater: UC is small and hands-on. Class sizes are small, faculty is friendly with an open-door policy and I’ve witnessed many, many students go on to great careers. I wouldn’t dismiss Utica College as an option for @NASA2014, especially with it’s small classes and attentive faculty. Plus, as noted, UC’s reduced tuition would be covered by OP’s Colgate grant.
If OP is considered a junior or senior transfer, then OOS tuition/fees for science majors is $36,000 at Penn State.
I don’t know if he can live on campus or not. Usually after two years students need to live off campus.
I also think that a SUNY and closer to home might be a better choice.
@austinmshauri is right I do have a learning disorder. Although, I’m completely normal just like my friends. Although for me it takes me longer. Longer to do homework. My mom said, “you’re completely normal, is just that for you it takes longer to complete tasks.” My GPA was currently at 2.8 last semester and the reason why it went down it was because I got two “D” on my final transcript. The classes were calculus 1 and Organic Chemistry 1. I’m currently retaking calculus 1 and got an 89 last test. The reason why my GPA is really low is because of testing skills. I’ve tried so many ways and I just can’t find the right way to study and prepare for a big test. What I’m doing with calculus won’t work with other subjects. It could work with Chemistry, but I’m not taking chemistry this semester.
Penn State is A BIG school, but not bigger than The Ohio State University. I believe attending Penn State will guide me through the adventure and find and formed a study group. Because Penn State is huge, the department of Meteorology isn’t big compared to other departments. When I visited Penn State in Summer 2015 I fell in love because of the energy the campus had. The energy gave me hope that someday I could come here and be with highly educated students who also struggled like me.
I’m NOT against SUNY Albany. When I visited, the campus didn’t have the same energy as PSU did. The campus felt like I was at my community college still. I go to MVCC, and because the campus of MVCC is small all the academic buildings are in the center of the campus. So when I went to SUNY Albany It was the same thing, but a bigger version of MVCC. I do, however, liked the Department of Atmospheric Science because it was small like Penn State.
We haven’t used the Colgate benefit yet. My parents had to take out loans for me to go to MVCC. Since the tuition was pretty cheap, I think my dad already paid them off. We couldn’t get financial aid for MVCC because my dad income is pretty high. I’ve been at MVCC for three years. MVCC has one of the lowest graduation rates 23% . So is very common at MVCC to have students transfer after three years. Students who graduate in two years, sometimes rush or are smart enough.
@momdoc I think I would be considered as a second semester Sophmore.
did you sign up for services (extended time) at the office of disability/accessibility services at your current school.
Did you review the process for signing up for services at the schools that you are considering?
Yes, I have extended time and other things. I haven’t looked at the process of how SUNY Albany and Penn State does their services.
So you guys think UC is not worth it?
Any private schools I could apply to? maybe some of them can give me aid? for example Syracuse University?
@NASA2014 are you talking about for 2017 fall admission? You have missed the financial aid deadlines for a LOT of private schools. The deadline at Syracuse for incoming freshmen was January 1. For transfers it’s July…but remember…transfer students are at the BOTTOM of the heap with regards to need based and merit aid.
Syracuse is mighty expensive and I can’t see how you expect to pay for it. Simply put…I don’t think you will get sufficient aid.
Why aren’t you looking at AFFORDABLE schools.
You have affordable schools. There’s nothing wrong with Albany. I don’t think your stats are competitive for Syracuse and it’s too expensive. You need a school where you can afford to attend for a 5th or 6th year if you need to spread your courses out.
I think you need to focus on the acceptances you have in hand and quit chasing dream schools. Your mom already said if Penn State rejects you then you’ll be attending Albany this fall, so I would quit looking. Personally, I wouldn’t attend Penn State even if they accept you. They’re too expensive. Go research what Albany has to offer and find things to love about that school.
Stay at a SUNY. You can’t afford OOS public schools, and don’t want to have that debt dragging you or your parents down. Penn State is not “all that” anyway – I wouldn’t recommend anyone pay OOS tuition for it.
5th and 6th year?
If a student has to drop a class, fails a class, or wants to take a lighter courseload per semester, that can extend their time at the school.
Good to have a backup plan in case that happens.
You’re in your 3rd year of cc now, right? If you finish Albany in 2 years, that’s 5. But if you need to spread your courses out or repeat any, that will add a 6th year. I’d budget for 3 more years, not 2.
How should I email admissions to extend my deadline of deposit? Albany and Buffalo
Visit both schools if you can and commit. Remember you will still need to submit a room deposit if you plan on living on campus
Well…you can’t commit to both schools!
Are you planning to visit? If so, make an appointment with financial, aid and talk to them in person when you are there.
Just got Ualbany conformation, now just waiting to hear back from UB if they are okay with me getting an extension!
People here say I should withdraw my application to UC. Since is not worth the tuition. Should I?
Im visiting Albany this April 23! I won’t visit UB until the semester is done.
Since housing is on a first come first served basis, you really should talk to them about making a housing deposit to hold your space if you plan on living in the dorms. You need to also sit with your parents to discuss off campus housing options if you cannot live on campus
