I do not know if it is worth it to apply to such a prestigious school like Georgetown with my resume. Freshman year I didn't really do anything, and it seemed like the transition to HS hurt me academically. Sophomore year also consisted of no honors/APs as well. I do not know what happened those two years, but I wasn't aware of what honors/AP classes were, therefore I did not take them.

Junior year I made an effort and attempted to take honors/AP classes, but because you needed recommendations to get into certain honors/all AP classes, I was only able to take two honors courses (Physics and Spanish).

As far as extracurriculars, I was totally clueless and either didn't make an effort or was lazy to.

As an upcoming senior this fall, I am taking tougher classes (AP Spanish/Statistics/Psychology, Honors Pre-Calc) and will take the AP Physics/Statistics/Psychology exam, and am debating whether to take AP Comp Sci.

Georgetown is my "dream" school, not only for academics, but because I have always followed them in sports. If I will apply to Georgetown, it would be for Early Decision.

With that being said, does it make sense for me to apply?

Apply. I’m a hispanic male who had a 3.55uw, 4.97w gpa and a 25 ACT, 1810 SAT. I got in and that’s where I am going in the fall. GU doesn’t have Early Decision, they have Early Action. You can’t denied EA, they can only defer your application until spring review. I was defered EA and then accepted in late march. Just apply and don’t let all of the people on cc discourage you. Your ACT score will balance out your GPA if that’s what you’re worried about. Just write really good essays.

Thanks man… that was very encouraging! I actually didn’t know the part about not getting deferred.

Congratz on getting in and good luck in your studies! You’re one smart kid…

No problem. Don’t forget to take two or three SAT Subject Tests too. Anything above a 650 will be considered good. Also, be really social at your interview. My interviewer was a really cool guy and I think he put in a good word for me in his interview report. Networking is really big at Georgetown, so get to know someone from the admissions office. When I was applying, I got in touch with a man from the admissions office and he added several things to my admissions file. i.e. e-mail print outs between us, AP scores (the GU app isn’t on the common app, so they don’t have a space to put in AP scores). He gave me good advice. I see that you have volunteered with habitat for humanity. There is a short essay prompt that asks about an activity that you have participated in the summer. Talk about how volunteering there has impacted your life and the life of others. In your personal essay, spill your guts. They want to know about your character. That’s what I did. Also, if you get deferred in the fall, don’t give up hope. Just send in your mid-year school report and hope for the best. I feel like I was in your position in the fall of last year too. The people on cc can be really negative, but just avoid them if they make you feel discouraged. If GU is your dream school, then try your best to make your application as strong as it can be. It was mine, and now my dream will be a reality in the fall!
