Dear CC-ers.

I wanted to take classes at my local community college and was wondering if the 2 classes would be wortht the 3 grand.

MY dad says it would be a waste and not help my app, but I don't care that much about my app and just want to learn.

What do you guys think?

Thanks

What else could you do this summer? Can you get a job and make money?

Are these classes related to what you want to study in college, and if so, are they likely to either transfer or help you get advanced standing?

If you expect to be going to Rutgers or another public college/university in New Jersey, is this a good way for you to check out the community college option?

Since this is stuff you want to learn, is there another cheaper way to learn it?

1) I would also be working
2)Yes, I’d be taking statistics and my HS does not offer AP Stats and I’m going to major in math…I’m not sure they will transfer
3)No, I’m going out of NJ and to a private most likely
4) NO cheaper OFFICIAL ways to learn it

If you just want to learn statistics, you can teach a lot of it to yourself. Ask your HS math teacher to recommend some books and/or websites for you to use.

Sit down with your dad, and find out just exactly how much money there is for your college education. He may prefer to save his pennies for when you really are in college, rather than spending them now on this “summer project”. 3 grand is a lot of money for only two courses at a community college. That would pay for 20 semester hours at our local community college, and would leave some change.

Sometimes if you take the community college courses through high school, you can get tuition discounts. check with your guidance counselor. Also, you can consider studying the material yourself through MIT Open CourseWare.

Thanks everyone.
It looks like I’ll be using MIT’s Open CourseWare, and I’m completely okay with that; as long as I can learn some kewl math ahah
