Is it worth it?

Hey fam,

I thought I was done with this website when I got into college, but I guess not lol

Anyway, I’m obviously going to do my own research, but I was wondering what ya’ll’s advice about this would be.

I’m currently a freshman in the honors program at a very good state university. However, I hate it. The culture here just isn’t for me, and I’ve been considering transferring into one of the CUNY schools (Brooklyn is the one I’ve been looking at, but I’m considering Baruch and Hunter as well). I don’t have any doubt that I wouldn’t be able to get into these schools, because I am way about the average test scores and I have good letters of rec from high school teachers, etc. I’m connecting with my professors here and I know I’m going to get good grades, so I really I don’t have any worries about my application.

My question lies in whether or not it’s actually worth it. I’m pretty not happy here, but at the same time I’ve met some nice people, and I have involved myself in a couple clubs. We’re only halfway through the first semester and it’s probs too early to tell, but I’ll probably miss them (maybe idk some of them are assholes js). The culture here is too much for me-- it’s so overwhelmingly sexist and I feel like I’m drowning in a sea of greek letters. But at the same time, I don’t know if the academics at the CUNY schools measure up to the ones at the institution I’m currently attending. Being challenged intellectually is pretty important to me.

I know the answer to all my concerns is that I should just wait it out, but I’m just not happy here. Idk

Thanks for the help CC

If your current university isn’t making you go broke, hang in there for the time being, and re-visit the issue of applying for transfer some time next spring. If you do want to transfer then, make a good list for yourself. Maybe the CUNYs would work.

It sounds like you answered your own question. You have made friends, connected with professors and been challenged in your academics. You are at a big state university and there is an extensive greek presence but that does not mean you have to join in if you don’t feel comfortable doing so. It is a big university and you can certainly find like-minded people. Many years ago, I was in a similar university and I wanted nothing to do with the fraternities and I had no trouble finding others.

Give it a chance and reassess in the Spring.

@mollified555: What is the name of the state university that you are attending now FSU?)? Are you from New York? From a financial perspective, can you outline the cost of your state university and CUNY school? Will you commute to the CUNY? Your major is Political Science, which IMHO, a number of CUNY Colleges can deliver excellent academics. Hunter and Baruch do not have campuses, so that is something you should factor into your decision making process. Have you given any consideration to CUNY-CCNY? They have a fairly nice campus and a well respected Political Science Department.

Are you planning on going on to graduate school (law school for example)?
