So I received my January test scores and I scored in the 90-91st percentile. Now, I know that they’re 2-3 percentiles below Exeter’s and Andover’s average so I’m just wondering if it would be worth a February 2nd retake?
In your opinion, in what circumstance would a retake be worth it?
FYI, the more I think about it, the more I realize that I’m not seriously considering taking it again. I just want to hear your opinions.
@YoungThriver Also don’t worry about the STEM thing—SSAT isn’t reflective of your abilities as a whole (for the most part) and you definitely don’t need a perfect score to prove that.
I’ve sold myself as a STEM kid but my lowest grades have been in math and my lowest SSAT category was math, so maybe I’m not the right person to speak lol
My kid is great in math. Her math teacher has said “one of the best I’ve taught.” Significantly lower ssat than what one would expect of such a student. Kid in her class who never understands what’s going on, always asking my kid for help = 99% Q. I am pretty sure schools know that your ssat score is not a perfect reflection of your ability in a subject.
I would not retake in February. I cannot imagine that score will keep you out of a school. Unless you think there’s a kid exactly like you in every way with 99% in everything.
@dogsmama1997 - some kids just know how to game the test better. My son did a lot better than my daughter and as far as I can tell it’s only because she took more chances on the math section than him. Normally they are very equal when it comes to math! And they are also good math students. I think the AOs can tell how many they skipped etc and can see that.
Hmmmm…retake a test for a result that will have no incremental impact on admission versus having my Saturday morning and $150 in pocket. I’m gonna have to think about that one. :-?
I know plenty of people who have gotten into elite schools (including myself) with lower scores than yours. Nevertheless, if you have nothing better to do, a retake (after more studying) wouldn’t hurt. I also know many people who got into elite schools with 99th percentile scores (who are a part of a certain racial group, in particular). So yes, a better score certainly wouldn’t hurt, given the competitiveness of admissions, but if you have better things to do, just know your scores are still fantastic.
DO NOT RETAKE. I was going to retake from my november score and i paid the late fee and everything. I ended up getting a worse score even though I thought I was going to do better. dont take the chance.
