I got my scores back with a 2202, and I felt awful because I got an 89th percentile average. Should I retake the test? Any insight?

Good question. I feel the same way about my scores… as in, I feel like I need to retake it!!! Hm, people have told me not to because it’ll be a waste of time. Your score is not a terrible score, and you could probably be using your time for something else… however, retaking or not really depends on what you have to show to the schools. If you don’t really have other great stuff, then I’d say to retake and get higher.

Meh…those scores put you on the playing field for every school (I’m assuming no single section was below 80%). It’s up to you. You might do somewhat better with a retake, but SSATs are far from the decisive factor in the application. Unlikely to impact the success or failure of your app.

If you have good grades to back up these scores, I wouldn’t worry about it.

I hate to post a completely useless comment… but wow, that’s such a good score! Just wondering, but are you feeling awful about your score because you’re applying to the top-tier schools, or is a score like that really considered “bad”?

Thanks for all the advice… My choices are top tier schools, with one safety which my friends are in and their dad is on some important committee, so a good chance there. I got straight A’s this semester, so I guess that helps. My teachers love me, and my interviews went well, so if the SSAT isn’t really the decisive factor then I think I’ll direct my energies into essays.
@ clairee I was hoping to reach the 90th percentile, and though my scores were all in the 700s, reading and math were pretty low in terms of percentile ( >85 percentile math and 89th percentile reading, though high vocab score).

It’s fine, not everyone is a stellar test taker. Schools know that test is no longer the “full measure” of a student’s ability.
