I was wondering if the major you choose is important to adcoms when they look at your app to decide whether or not they want you.
I know of someone from my school who is now going to Columbia as a math major, and he thinks that one of the reasons he got accepted is because Columbia is known for journalism, hence many people who applied wanted to study that field. So being a math major, he thought he added "diversity" and was accepted.
Stanford is known more for its science majors... so would they want people who didn't want to major in a science? (Personally, I'd like to double major in Business management/entrepreneural studies with fashion design - is that even offered? Or broadcast journalism/public relations etc.) Would that be an edge?
Also... what about people who are undecided? Does that account for anything when it comes to admissions?

I put Religious Studies, tee hee. I wasn't lying though.

Do people lie about their majors?

i bet it helps if they see like, i put physics major, and I did a lot of physics things. Like that your major matches up with ur passion. Otherwise idk.

i bet i'm the 15, 769th indian applying with at least one of the options relating to bio.

aww... lucky you guys,
you can do plenty with bio and physics and what not to show your passion for it...
where am I going to find someone with their own fashion/product line to learn from or intern for...

my ECs do have to do with religion - my entire list is composed of either stuff at church or stuff in band. Hopefully that adds some diversity as I'm from communist china.

haha... yeah I bet that does help... eeekkkk... between now and fall 06 I guess I have to find something that relates to business/entrepreneurship, or fashion design, or journalism... does magazine editor fall under journalism too?

maybe start your own clothing and perfume line? :)

haha...
only if you promise to buy :D

Do you think it matters if my major and EC's were completely unrelated?

well... idk.. that's what I'm trying to figure out right now...
my ECs consist of
theater
dance
acadec
tennis
newspaper (oh here's one that might work)
starting tomorrow - gymnastics

see, I would've wanted to major in performing arts.. until that dream was mercilessly crushed... :(
now I got just about no correlation between ECs and major

Well, I want to major in classical studies, and there are pretty much no ECs relating to that.

classical studies - as in ancient Europe? back to Rome, Greece, etc?

I think that if you show a lot of passion in a somewhat obscure major and then put it as your 1st choice and talk about it in your essays, it may be a push. Anyone else do that for social and cultural anthropology?

Yep, as in ancient Europe. Although I love ancient mesoamerican civilizations too, like the Incas. And I also want to go a little father back and look at early humans too. Man, I just love that stuff. It'll be pretty hard finding employment, though.

maybe you should look into doing Acadec as an EC
last year the subject was Ancient Rome (I think) because we studied the works of Sophocles, etc. Each year we have art, math, science, literature, music, economics pertaining to the age we study. This year it was Renaissance... perhaps that might help you?

so its a bad idea to put undecided? im not sure what i want to be. i mean i can be a lawer, a doctor, hey if get into stanford, maybe i can be president (lol) i seriously have no clue what i want to do with my life. all i know is that no matter what it is, getting an undergrad from stanford will help.

I put undecided on all my apps.

<<hey if="" get="" into="" stanford,="" maybe="" i="" can="" be="" president="" (lol)="">></hey>

sweatdrop. Wasn't the most (in)famous Stanford president Herbert Hoover?
