Is Michigan (the state) is stingy?!

I just got my financial aid package, and I'm really happy with it. I got like $10k from the federal government (including work-study) and $8.5k from U of M (which is great!), and the rest in loans, but nothing from the state of Michigan!

I guess I'll hear about the Michigan competitive scholarship later on, but is there anything else from the state? Don't they give out any need based aid at all?

Don't get me wrong. I'm very happy with my aid, but I was just curious. It'd be nice to know if I can expect anything else to lower my loans. Thanks!

I believe they’re just not ready to release aid information just yet as the deadline just hit on March 1st. They probably haven’t begun distributing state money yet. I don’t really know but this is my assumption

Don’t hold your breath. the state has no money.

Your the first that I’ve heard getting aid from UofMich. Do you mind stating how much of loans you have to take out? I just ask these questions out of interest to all the schools I’ve applied to since my efc is 0 and I like to get a general ideal of how the school distribute aid.

I thought the state money was included with federal.

sorry, dont mean to steal your thread but i thought this was the appropriate place. did you get so much money from UofM because youre instate?? definitely just curious and congrats. i got 2k from them and im out of state. so was just wondering. i got a total of about 13k including work study and the standard 5.5 in loans. my dad was definitely okay with the money we got considering we’re from texas, and i dont think he plans on taking out any of the loans.

Haha, the state giving you money. Now THAT is funny. Didn’t you see the protests over the Promise scholarship last year?

At least you KNOW you’re not getting anything. All current students had it in their financial aid packages and just never got it. -.-

EDIT: The MCG is up in the air. I wouldn’t count on it being funded this year :(

Eivita3, I’m in-state and they gave me a $500 grant, a work-study and the rest in loans (to equal 10k)… so no, it’s not just due to residency.

out of state, i only got 5.5K in loans. now i’m hoping for scholarships

Eivita and coolbrezze, and, I’m instate with an EFC of 0. On top of the money I listed above (it’s almost $19k in grants and work study), U of M also gave me $3.5k subsidized loans, and $2k perkins loans, for a total of around $24k in aid, which fully meets my need (so I won’t need to take out any more loans or anything. I might not accept the Perkins if I get a job this summer).

Coolbrezze, all I got from the government was the full pell grant, FSEOG, and ACG, nothing at all from the state.

I think the Michigan competitive scholarship is still happening. I got a letter form the Department of Treasury, telling my to call the Office of Scholarships and grants and give them my SSN so I can be considered for the scholarship. I was wondering if there’s any other form of aid though?

Damn… I haven’t got anything yet. I am going to be an out of state upper classman and I can’t pay 50K out of pocket. $5,000 in loans wont do jack for me. How did you find out? Do they mail you something or do you have to check online?

It was on wolverine access.

Michigan is busted. I’m expecting it to have an effect on the university at some point.

The University paid the Michigan promise grant for students who were, well, promised it this year. I wouldn’t expect this to happen again.

I hope that Michigan can make smart cuts to retain the ultimate legacy of that great school. I am concerned, though. It is a very expensive institution to run, they are in a state where the kids have been hit harder than other states, financially. It is an exhorbitantly priced school for out of staters. My son was interested, but 50k is just not in the plan. Fortunately, they are still really drawing in the recruits because of their reputation. I anticipate you will see even larger percentages of affluent internationals to take up the slack.

If it makes Michigan feel any better, I suspect that the California State University system is also going to have a rough go.

We’re OOS and our EFC was Mid-20K. The only aid we got was 5.5k in federal loans. Michigan is a great school, but my son won’t be attending.

UMLawMan,

They certainly did not pick up the promise scholarship this school year!

I must be thinking of the michigan competitive scholarship then, because I had to find the money to pay the shortfall when they couldn’t pay it and they reimbursed me halfway through the semester.

Balthezar, if you don’t mind me asking, what was your EFC number? Or was Mid 20k the actual amount of money your family had to come up with?

I am just trying to estimate how much money I should expect from Michigan. My family is upper middle class, but I can’t attend Michigan if I must come up with that much money. Instate kids have it good :frowning:

I guess I could stay instate and go to UVA…

UVA…you are CRAZY! U of M is a fabulous school, certainly, but if UVA is instate, it is awesome, too! You are lucky! Go to UVA!!!
