Is MUN worth it?

I'm thinking about joining next year because I have a strong interest in political science, but I have a few concerns. I am not a great public speaker... at all. I frequently freeze in class reciting a poem or something. But I would like to improve on that. Will model UN help me get over this? On the other hand, I'm absolutely terrified of screwing up. At my school, this club is rather elitist, and most people join freshmen year, so that doubles my concerns about fitting in and not making a fool of myself. I would love to give it a try, and I have the research and writing skills to do it. If anyone has any experience in MUN or with this particular situation, please please help me out.

Thanks! (Also, information on how much work it is would be nice too)

yes it’s definitely worth it. MUN is AMAZING! Do it

Youll never know until u try. Sounds like u want to but are a little scared. That is all the more reason to go for it.

You should keep in mind that your relative ranking of your school’s MUN team might have an impact on college admissions. My high school is consistently the #1 team for MUN in America, and most of the people involved get into their top choice school (Yale, Brown, etc.). I don’t know how good it will “look” to admissions officers if you team does poorly.

MUN can be a bit scary at first, but it definitely gets better as you learn to improve your public speaking and researching skills. I would say to give it a go and see how you like it. If you end up hating it, you can just drop the club.
