Is my GPA too low for UF?

Hi, I made a thread in the chance me forum a while back but I’ve since retaken the SAT and have some new club positions and volunteer opportunities lined up so I wanted to ask in the UF forum

Here are my stats:
SAT: 2280
UF-GPA: 4.06
UW-GPA: 3.51

AP/DE Classes:
Softmore year: AP Human geo
Junior year: AP chemistry, AP english language, AP US History
DE: Comparative politics, world history, psychology
Senior year: AP Physics C (self study), AP Calc AB, AP Statistics, AP Government, AP english literature

Officer positions:
Co-Founder and Vice president of the College exploration group: A club that a friend and I founded this year that will plan various field trips to state and local schools, expecting about 80-150 members.
Director of Tutoring of Phi Beta Chi (Science honor society): In charge of running all tutoring related activities for next year, will help hundreds of students throughput course of the year.

Clubs:
MAO (Math honor society): Junior and senior year
Pass it on (Charity and community service club): Junior year
Phi Beta Chi ( Science honor society) : Junior and senior year
Biotechnology club: Junior and Senior year
SECME: Junior and Senior year
NHS (National honor society): Senior year
Spanish honor society: Senior year
College Exploration Group: Senior year

Sports:
Track and Field: Softmore year

Volunteering:
Summer of freshman year: Helped out at a local elementary school (about 50 hours)
Junior year: Was appointed team leader of the EKG program and helped students after school for about 40 hours of service.
Summer of this year(Junior year): Volunteering at a local science museum as a guide, expecting about 300 hours of service.

I know my stats are all pretty solid except for my GPA, which falls slightly below the 25th percentile weighted and, according to the common data set, only in the third percentile unweighted. I’m concerned and honestly surprised by the GPA statistics in the common data set( is it possible that GPA uses their “UF-GPA” even though it says unweighted?)

Either way I would appreciate it if someone with knowledge and experience with UF admissions could chance me, thanks

What grade are u in

I’m currently a junior.

If your PSAT was anywhere near your SAT, you could be a National Merit Finalist and eligible for the Florida Incentive Scholarship which is full COA (if a FL resident). I don’t think you need to worry about admission.

How do you get that SAT score?

Persistence  I’ve always been great at math and managed to get an 800 by my third retake. Reading I pulled off a 760 by some miracle and writing I got a 720 by basically memorizing erica meltzers book.

As you said, your GPA is a little low, but your other stats help make up for it. It’s just outside of the middle 50%.

UF uses holistic admissions, and it can seem a bit random at times. 50% is based on GPA (most important), Class Rigor and test scores (least important). The other 50% is based on EC’s, leadership, work experience, volunteering, etc.

One way to think about it, 25% or so that will get admitted have a lower GPA. You should apply to a few other schools and have one or two safeties, but hopefully you’ll not need them.

Good Luck!

EDIT: I should add, that UF will also compare you to your peers in high school. It helps if you’re ranked fairly high in your class. Also, if your school doesn’t offer many AP, honor, etc, classes, it will not be held against you. They determine class rigor based on what classes are available at your school

In other words, UF may view your 4.06 GPA as better than someone with a 4.2 GPA at another high school. Or that you took a more rigorous schedule, than someone that took more AP classes at another high school

Got to love holistic admissions…

Thanks for the reply Gator88Ne! I’m more concerned with my unweighted GPA then anything else. Do you happen to know if UF looks at unweighted GPA during the admissions process or do they only look at the UF GPA?

UF GPA, but in context of your high school. In the Student Self-reported Academic Record (SSAR), you enter each of your classes, the grades you’ve earn and if they are honor, AP, DE, IB or AICE classes. The SSAR then generates the GPA (weighted) for admissions to review. UF doesn’t request your high school transcripts, until you’re accepted. They only use the SSAR for admissions.

I have taken every core class honors level since freshman year of highschool (except my math classes because they didnt let me for some reason) and 1 aice, 1 dual enrollment, and 2 AP… Is this bad if i want to be accepted into uf??

It’s not bad. For most folks accepted to UF, it wasn’t a sure thing. That’s the nature of holistic admissions.

At this point, your GPA is set, and all you can do is make sure you take a normal (for you) rigorous schedule as a senior. Apply to UF, you have a solid shot at it, but make sure you also apply to a few other schools. Make sure you have a few options to choose from and try to enjoy your senior year!

Good Luck!
