So, its April 1st and it seems that I have whittled my choices down to UCSB and NYU.

As of now, I don't really have a passion for attending either, but I have to make a choice. I am looking for the college experience but not enough to jeopardize my future. NYU is a private school and pretty well known, which would logically give me an edge when applying to graduate school.

However, is the difference really that big?

Would it hurt my chances greatly when applying to grad school?

I don't know what I want to do with my life yet, so for now I'm just majoring in Biology.

Thanks in advance to anyone that would offer advice.

EDIT: Money is not an issue in this decision.

if you plan on going to grad school then you should know that undergrad dosent matter as long as you get a good gpa and test scores. my advice would be to go with the one that is best for your major and the one that (Yes im going to say this) is cheaper for you. i mean there is much difference beside location and cost between the schools

UCSB is recognized just as much as NYU, more so here on the west coast.

I’m deciding between the two as well, but considering the fact that I STILL have not received a letter from NYU, the decision is almost being made itself. I know a lot of people that go to NYU and I hate them, so I guess I am choosing UCSB because I know the people aren’t completely self-centered, arrogant, and trading out all forms of a real personality attempting to be avant-garde.

I go to NYU and everyone here is like that… That’s why I’m trying to transfer!

haah just kidding there are alot of really cool people here but… let me just warn you… NYU is really run as a big business. They really don’t make an effort to cater to the students - regarding advising, help with financial issues, etc. I have gotten a couple of really cool profs though, so that’s good… but nonetheless I am trying to transfer and so are alot of people I know. Good luck w/ your decision.

@malibu: Let’s not exaggerate. Unless you attend Ivy’s for undergrad, the undergrad you attend doesn’t really matter (especially between UC’s and NYU). NYU is ranked 3 places better in USN but costs 40 thousand more. NYU CAS undergrads and UC undergrads both make a mean starting salary of 50 thousand a year. Don’t reply with “it’s easier to get a job with an NYU degree” argument because if you are capable, you WILL get one. If you plan on going to grad school, by all means go to UCSB. You get a better environment, don’t get into a ton of debt, and still have the same chances of getting into a good grad school (say Harvard, Yale, etc.). NEVER attend a school for it’s prestige (unless it’s an Ivy). Between NYU and UCSB, go with the one that will fit you best for four years. Besides, the happier you are, the more you will achieve.

I’m in the same boat. I want the prestige of NYU but the traditional college experience of UCSB. And I’m OOS at both schools, so they’ll end up costing about the same for me. I have no clue what to do.
