So, its April 1st and it seems that I have whittled my choices down to UCSB and NYU.

As of now, I don't really have a passion for attending either, but I have to make a choice. I am looking for the college experience but not enough to jeopardize my future. NYU is a private school and pretty well known, which would logically give me an edge when applying to graduate school. However, the location and campus of UC Santa Barbara is pretty enticing.

Is the difference in education and name really that big?

Would it hurt my chances greatly when applying to grad school?

I don't know what I want to do with my life yet, so for now I'm just majoring in Biology.

Thanks in advance to anyone that would offer advice.

EDIT: Money is not an issue in this decision.

I am facing a lot of the same issues as you right now. I think others can offer you advice, but really you need to be completely happy with your decision. You didn’t mention any financial issues, so if money is not the problem, you have a great advantage over other people who have to take that into consideration when making this decision.

Personally, you say you don’t know what you want to do and are going for bio, so I don’t think it would hurt your chances of going to UCSB. NYU is a great great great school, but Stern and Tisch are what really stand out there. If you received high grades at UC, I think it would be comparable to a high GPA at NYU.

For your major, I don’t think the name difference is really that big. You should research the campuses of both and see which you like more. NYU doesn’t have that campus feel, I don’t know much about the UC’s, but depending on what you like that might be a better fit for you.

Hey, I’m a science major at NYU and while I like it here, I would definitely not pay full price - and I think you’re mistaken about Grad school. In the sciences, Grad schools look primarily at 3 things: Grades in your major, GRE, and Research - research is a huge deal! Going to NYU isn’t going to give you much of an advantage at all for Grad school. I’m going to apply to grad school and I’ve never heard that students here have a leg up in admissions or something - it comes down to research and grades.

Btw, if you’re in-state at UC, it would be the most logical choice imo. Enjoy the sunshine!

“nyu is not worth the money you pay unless you are attending stern”

…Right, unless you’re not a business major, in which case you don’t give a crap about stern and are interested in one of the many top programs NYU has…business is not even NYU’s best major, sorry

but I stick with my earlier comment that in this particular case, I would not go. i turned down better schools than nyu so I could avoid being in debt, because I just don’t think college is worth $200k or crazy pricetags, and it won’t make a different with science grad admissions anyhow

^^^yeah. Ranked 5th in the nation… Now we are talking what is worth it. I am going there too. BTW, did you hear NYU is the feeder for its own law school?

That is cool. I’m really hoping NYU undergrad gets me into NYU Law School. Its one of the only reasons I’m going to ungrad there for that price.

I’m facing the same issue here, only with UCLA and Stern :S

I really do think that by the time you get older, nobody cares what undergrad school you went to. And that includes grad schools and jobs as well – you can be at a so-so college but you just need to have a good GPA, good internships, good resume (maybe?) to get in.

So if you’re only worried about going to a more prestigious/highly-ranked school for grad school, I think you should choose UCSB.

NYU does have an advantage that it’s in NYC, 'nuff said But it doesn’t have a campus, which is a major down.

Also remember you’re gonna be LIVING in this place for FOUR YEARS of your life! The four best years! Might as well enjoy it So I vote UCSB.
