I feel like I'm behind in my work (FPF + premed), so I signed up for summer classes. The only problem is that I'd end up taking Chem 3B in the fall (so that I can take Bio 1A/L in the spring). Should I delay Chem 3B so that I can get Pedersen?

SUMMER (I need at least 6 units for finaid)
Chem 3A
Chem N3AL
Physics 8A (or an arts/lit breadth)

FALL
Chem 3B/L
Bio 1B
breadth?

SPRING
Bio 1A/L
Physics 8B

i’m pretty sure bio 1a/l is a pre-req for chem 3b/l. i would take bio 1a/l in the summer and then chem 3b/l in the fall with vollhardt. it probably is a lot easier to get an A in vollhardt’s class than it is in pedersen’s because there’s 1000+ people in chem 3b/l in the fall.

definitely worth it. pedersen is way better than vollhardt. take bio 1a/1al in the fall and 3b/3bl in the spring.

i’m in pedersen’s class right now and even though he is a good lecturer, imo it’s not worth it to delay your schedule just to take orgo with him.

2 reasons:

if this were an upper-div course (more specialized knowledge) a good professor would make a big difference i would think, but this is just general organic chemistry so you can learn from the book just as well.

vollhardt gives out more A’s (28%) than pedersen (22%) AND there’s 1000 students in fall versus 500 students in spring in chem 3b, so it’s even easier (generally, the averages on tests get lower as the number of students goes up).

hm, it’s true that more people get A’s with vollhardt, but his tests are pretty hard, and his teaching style doesn’t really help at all. Bio 1a/l isn’t a prereq for chem 3b/l (i took them chem then bio, so i should know), but it depends on how good you are at self-study. If u need actual teaching, wait for ped. if u just like learning from the book, go for vollhardt and just get it over with.

Normally, I recommend against combining Chem 3B/L with Bio 1B, but here is my suggestion

This summer:
Chem 3A/L + breadth

Fall
Bio 1A/L

Spring
Chem 3B/L
Bio 1B

Put Physics in whereever you like.

reason #3 i forgot to add:

webcasts vs. class at 8am

Lol what leftist suggested is exactly what I did. I’m in 3B/L and Bio 1B right now and it’s fine. Do that.

I’m taking Chem 3B/L, Bio 1B and Physics 8B and doing 14+ hours of research and I find it pretty manageable.

^how did you get into all of those?? didn’t they all completely fill up phase I?

i wanted to do that but ended up taking mcb100a instead of 8b

I had to phase 1 chem 3b/l and I got into bio because it was was manual so when somebody dropped it I just signed up and got in since the waitlist wasn’t automatic (I know not fair for waitlisted people). For physics there wasn’t a waitlist so I just checked like a hawk until there was an opening, grant it my lab/dis is 8-10am. I’m so happy being done with lower divs…I might just cry haha

Would following the schedule posted by anon2528462 leave me enough time to take mcb upper divs? Also, do you guys know of any interesting (and/or easy) international studies and arts/lit breadths? Thanks!
