J.Crew, BR, Lacsote, Diesel, G-Star, and a few things from Express

It's funny how some suburban kids and yuppies think that "preppy" is abercrombie and fitch, aeropostale, or hollister.

haha, those are trashy/trendy brands.

First of all genuine "preppy" is a lifestyle that in its truest sense is the opposite of materialism/trendiness for which A&F, aero, hollister stand for. Real preppy pays respect to history.

THE current real preppy brands are Brooks Brothers, J. Press, the Andover Shop, and Murray's Toggery shop.

Ralph Lauren and Lacoste, in the present, are questionable, although in the past they used to be part of the preppy wardrobe. Now it really seems as if they have sold themselves out to the materialism/conspicious consumption.

For example, those Big Polo shirts by Ralph Lauren! Cmon, that's yuppie-ish; a real prep would not flaunt their wealth/money by wearing those insanely big logos or wear trashy/skimpy/unrespectable clothing from A&F or hollister.

btw, i went to arguably the most elite prep school, Phillips Exeter Academy. Most students from the historic prep schools like mine or Andover would know, since the entire prep tradition started at schools like these in the 18th century before moving on to the ivy league.

I would like to add:

Allen Edmonds and Aldens for shoes. Eljo's and O'Connells are traditional as well.

the classic attire in the winter is:

a BB oxford cloth button down with a repp tie, with a J.Press shaggy dog sweater and a tweed jacket from the andover shop, along with a pair of wool pants and nice shoes.

sorry to ask again...wheres a good place to buy nice looking shorts for summer. cargos preferably but whatever looks nice with tees, polos, etc. is ok

I bought some nice seersucker shorts at brooks brothers the other day...in addition to BB Polo has some nice khaki and seersucker shorts.

THANK YOU.

LOL@the debate around "preppy". You people are so sad.

Jack Wills is also solid but they are located on the other side of the pond (England).

This is the stupidest "debate" ever. A&F is to Polo what the Royals are to the Yankees: technically they're in the same league, but one just wishes it had the prestige of the other.

I wonder how people's responses would change if they could only buy clothes with money that they earned as opposed to what their parents gave them.

As for me I'm perfectly content getting T shirts/polos/button ups for $10-15 max that I found in the bargin bin. They are nice looking, but unfortunately they don't sport an alligator or horse so I'm sure they are trashy. Most will last me at least until I'm done will college I bet.

I agree though that A&F clothes are overpriced and of poor quality. I say this not because they are too low class for me, but rather because instead of buying an ugly shirt at A&F for $40 that HAS to have the A&F name plastered all over it (or the ugly moose), I could get a much nicer looking shirt at the Gap for $30 cheaper.

"You people dress like 13 year olds.

American Eagle? Aeropostale? Abercrombie? Jesus...hit puberty."

It's so ridiculous to put down people because they don't want to spend as much (or can't) on clothes as you. I live in Ohio, and around me the only places I'm going to find shirts cheaper than, say $40 are basically Old Navy, Gap, H&M, AE, Aeropostale and A&F.

oh god....really, lets not get into the whole abercrombie=preppy debate. that doesnt mean you should call abercrombie trashy, even if its not preppy. it's just a different style of taste. if you wear abercrombie, that doesnt make you a wannabe. lets not penalize ppl for their tastes. what if they actually like it, and does not wear it JUST because its trendy? i like abercrombie because their clothes are very skinny and i am overly-skinny. its hard to find clothes because many times, the clothes i like are too baggy for me :( and abercrombie fits me well. some of their clothes i hate, some i like, etc. who cares.

if you like lacoste and ralph lauren, fine. if you like abercrombie, fine. if you like old navy's, fine.

btw jonathan k are these shoes for like, tennis or something? being practical here but these shoes look like they'll get dirty really quickly.

personally, i dont like those clothes that shout out their name brands. i wont buy abercrombie shirts with ABERCROMBIE scrolled across it, or lacoste shoes with the crocodile sticking out like an eyesore. i'm not insulting you, i'm just announcing my own taste, for no one's benefit, i guess, lol.

I don't wear clothes like trhat either. I find it really tacky when someone wears a shirt that says, "ABERCROMBIE AND FITCH," all across the front. Really it just says, "POSER WANNA BE." I have those Lacoste shoes because I like them. I don't only wear Lacoste shoes. I have Nike, Adidas, Converse, etc. as well.

actually, the mindset of the prep is to buy clothes that aren't promiscuous, ostentatious, or flashy but clothes that are understated and very high quality.

The point is that preps wear clothes that have a history of being high quality, durable, and well-made, not just buying clothes to have some big darn logo plastered on their body.

Abercrombie's quality does not correlate with its very high prices. It's yuppie-ish in the sense that it serves the growing materialism by being a brand that middleclass or yuppies wear just for the brand, despite its relatively bad quality.

There are plenty of inexpensive brands at department stores that arent targeted at middle schoolers. AE, Aeropostale and A&F's target audiences are 13-16 year olds. If you are that age thats fine, but there are other similarly-priced brands like Polo Jeans Co. and DKNY Jeans that target high schoolers and older.

Land's End/LLBean arent that expensive, but they show maturity.

Those are the nicest and most classic American shoes:

500 bucks, worth every penny...

Alden makes great dress shoes.

RL and lacoste clothing isn't that expensive if you buy them from an outlet store. You can get a RL or lacoste polo for about $20 a pop. The clothes from outlet stores are from previous seasons, but practically no one will notice.

Also I think that AF polos are nicer than the ones from RL because they fit better.

im like that too...i buy some AF tees but the ones that dotn really show it off. I also buy their polos, when on sale. I just like the way they fit

a&f, hollister, ae, aeropostale. hahaha who buys that ****? vineyard vines, gentlemen.
