Well my friend just told me one of the seniors he knew got into SB with a 2.1 GPA and a Low 1500 SAT score. Is it an easy school to get into? I'm keep getting confused cuz some people say it's extremely easy to get into, while some say it's a bit difficult, and that you need to have at least a 2.8+ GPA or something like that.

They accept the fact they are a safety school.

Hi I live in New York and I have seen a lot of people get rejected from stony brook even though they had high test scores and gpas. Stony brook hasn’t been considered the best of the schools in NY but recently if you get into Stony it is like a godsend. The people at stony have really upped their standards.

Also your friend could have got into stony because usually since they are known as a safety school they admit more people who would be MORE LIKELY TO ATTEND after getting accepted. For example they will reject the 97 avg. and admit he 87 avg since they know that the 97 avg student will get into a better school and go there instead of stony. As where the 87 student would more likely put stony as a reach or dream school instead of a safety.

But don’t fret you will probably get in.

Could have been through a special program like EOP, which accepts low-income students who don’t meet the school’s normal admissions standards and provides extra support services for them. It’s a great program.

Also keep in mind you might not be hearing accurate stats.

So many people apply to SUNY this year, many of them were rejected with better scores. I don’t think that is Stony Brook’s normal admission criteria. Maybe your friend has some special hooks?

You can’t judge by one person’s GPA and SAT score. A kid w/ similiar stats got into UC Berkeley from my school (ranked dead last too!). His mom was the director of the admissions office!

It actually depends on what school in stony brook you’re applying to. Like with those stats you can generally get in the regular programs offered at stony, but getting into the Honors College at Stony Brook is no joke at all. My friend got accepted into Stony Brook Honors College at Cornell (majoring in Pre-med) and opted for Stony. Clearly Stony Brook has a good reputation…well at least the Honors College does.

No, with those stats you can’t “generally get into the regular programs” at Stony Brook. Those are well below even the 25th percentile of accepted stats IIRC. People with better numbers than that are rejected all the time.

It’s impossible to say what happened with any particular case. Everyone’s heard weird stories about someone with stats lower than a thousand so-and-sos who got rejected inexplicably getting into a great school. Sometimes there’s stuff going on we don’t know about (recruited athlete or other hook-worthy skill, dramatic upward trend, reported stats are wrong, compelling personal circumstances, admitted through a special program… etc.), sometimes someone just got lucky.

What everyone said (that there could be other explanations) is right. SUNY SB is regarded as a pretty good school–especially for pre-med/hard sciences.

Hey you got a multi-billion dollar particle accelerator handed to you by the federal government all of a sudden you’re going to start acting “selective” too.
