Hello everyone! So I was accepted to Syracuse’s Newhouse and also to UCSB. Money’s not a huge problem in choosing; although I would be saving more money at UCSB. I’m having a major crisis (pun intended) so I’m not entirely sure I want to pursue journalism. I intend to try out environmental science at either school.
If you had to chose between both schools, where would you go and why? Is Syracuse’s debt worth it?
Also, is it true Syracuse’s student body consists of many upper class students? If so, how important is socioeconomics in making friends at Syracuse? This is an important factor for me.
I’m also from Los Angeles so I know the snow at Syracuse would be a challenge…
You say “money is not a huge problem”… but then later are concerned about taking on debt…
You really need to be more detailed… exactly what are the costs of attendance (tuition/fees/room/board/travel minus scholarships/grants not including loans)? How much will your parents pay, and how much loans will you will need to take out for each choice.
I dont think Syracuse is worth it. However, I dont know anything about Syracuse. Meanwhile, UCSB is well regarded. If its more affordable, I think it would be a fine choice.
Thats how it works. My personal opinion was evoked and provided. Syracuse is not on my radar and is not worth it. I have no doubt UCSB will provide a quality education, plus in this case it comes at a more affordable price. Syracuse? I dont know but I wouldnt put extra money into that when UCSB is an excellent option.
@harvardandberkeley I would be paying $14,000 for Newhouse, $7,000 for UCSB. My parents are willing to help me out, but I’m sure I’ll be left with the loans (which I’m fine with as long as I think it’s worth the debt).
Thanks to everyone who responded. I’m just not sure I actually want to major in journalism. If feel like I’d rather major in other areas, concentrating on subjects I’m interested in and working for my school’s newspaper.
You know that UCSB doesn’t have a journalism major, right? “Communications” is not journalism. UCSB is a good school, and environmental science is very good there. The Nexus is a nice paper, but it’s not a major. Be aware of the course list in UCSB’s Communications Dept if you may still be interested in journalism.
