Is the dorm Ecology House really antisocial?

Hey, I'm a class of 2014 transfer student who's just been assigned to Ecohouse and (idiotically) only after I signed my housing contract did I check what the social scene was like at Ecohouse and I've heard quite terrible things..that everyone's antisocial and nerdy and basically never leave the Ecohouse. Can someone please give me a little insight on what the social scene is like currently since the posts I read WERE about 3+ years old.

If you're assigned to the Ecohouse this Fall 2012 semester, please let me know that you're not any of those things.

I had a friend who lived in Eco-house. It’s very far from campus. The people there are definitely very communal and friendly amongst each other. However, it is definitely a bit isolated from campus, so definitely keep that in mind. However, that isn’t going to stop you from making other friends on-campus, so I wouldn’t worry too much about it.

ty equilibrium! you really put me at ease with your post. did your friend end up having a positive experience overall there? would he/she live there again?

I am an incoming freshman at Cornell so I can’t say much on the social scene of the ecology house, however I did visit it during a Diversity hosting in the spring and am currently at cornell for a prefreshman program and can describe a bit of the location. As mentioned before it is very far from campus. I was fully set a long time ago on being in the Ecology house until I actually walked over to it. The house itself seemed fine, it would just so inconvenient to be walking back and forth from Eco-House to classes, student store, college town, etc. There might be a bus to help transport you, but I’m not sure how close it is or the hours the bus runs. Too be honest the main thing that drove me away from the house was the distance, though I’ll probably still be a non-dorming member by paying whatever the membership fee is to still be a part of certain activities and programs they host. Once again, you will still probably be able to make many friends from within and outside the eco-house and all social things associated with that should be fine, but if you’re not a fan of walking long distances or waking up early to make it to classes on time u may want to reconsider just being a non-residential member of the ecology house like I’m going to probably be.

I think my friend did. However, he didn’t like how it was so far away. Nevertheless, it’s just an extra 10-20 minutes of walking each day, so it’s no big deal. You could try to change your dorm, but as long as you are active on campus/take initiative to meet people and get involved, where you live won’t be a very big deal.
