To start off, the fact that I was accepted into Dartmouth is a miracle to me since my English SAT scores were all horrid (under 680). Because of these low scores, would I be required to take a writing placement exam later on during orientation? I believe there was some sort of placement exams in the past, but I'm not too certain.

Some students are “invited” to take extra writing courses; that is, beyond Writing 5 and the Freshman Seminar. I have no idea what the criteria are, though.

Try going to the Writing Program pages on the D website. They probably explain it there.

Students whose Reading and Writing scores are below 620 may be invited to take Writing 2-3 instead of Writing 5. Writing 2-3 offers more attention, including private tutoring I believe. After either Writing 2-3 or Writing 5, you take a Freshman Seminar.

What standrews cites are the criteria for being allowed to skip writing 5 and go directly to the freshman seminar, not the criteria for being invited to take writing 2/3. The criteria seem to be slightly different every year. 12s had a higher CR cutoff, IIRC, but no mention of the essay score that I can recall.

If you’re scores were very low or it is believed you come from a high school background that may not have offered enough writing preparation, you might have to take writing 2/3 before your freshman seminar instead of writing 5 before your freshman seminar, but i don’t believe there is an additional test you’ll have to take. And if horrid under 680 is like 660, I don’t think that’s low enough that you wouldn’t be placed into writing 5. Also depends if that’s your CR score or your writing score, though.

It’s not like they’re sending you for remedial English or anything.

Ah, thanks a lot for all that information!

I think I read somewhere that if my score is under 680, I have to do an online placement exam? Not sure. I have a writing score of 660 and critical reading score of 610 (I know! Don’t judge me. LOL)

I don’t mind taking writing 2/3 if it provides a lot of focus and attention on my writing. I’m just worried that I have to go through a placement test just to get into a writing class that doesn’t contribute to the require courses I need to graduate. :(
