My parents are pretty much stuck in the middle class. Enough money for bills and food and not much else. So for my college choices in STEM, it's pretty much Purdue or Rose.
I'd prefer Rose because I live close by and could easily leech off my parents.
I know Rose is pretty small, so aid money is going to be hard to come by.
Does Rose have an estimation calculator? I tried to look at one, and the one they had up wasn't very informative on potential aid.

Is this what you looked at? It should do the trick:

https://prodbss.rose-hulman.edu/BanSS/RHIT_NPCALC.P_Index

The above link does not work.
Here is the NPC for Rose-Hulman:

Alright, I’m looking at $30,000 a year.
To make Rose cost competitive to other engineering schools of similar quality, how difficult is $5,000-$10,000 merit aid?
Is there a separate calculator for this?

Rose does not seem to have a formula (like minimum GPA & SAT/ACT scores) or calculator for merit schoalrships.
Check here <a href=“Scholarships & Grants | Rose-Hulman”>404 | Rose-Hulman; for scholarships.
“How difficult is $5,000-$10,000 merit aid?”
Maybe you can get a clue from here: <a href=“Rose-Hulman vs. UIUC vs. Miami OH Computer Engineering - Engineering Majors - College Confidential Forums”>http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/engineering-majors/1632578-rose-hulman-vs-uiuc-vs-miami-oh-computer-engineering.html

Getting $10/15,000+ isn’t uncommon for Rose. If you did well in high school / had a good ACT/SAT score you should have no problem. Also, if you give them a call (better yet, visit in person) and ask for more money, they will probably give it to you. I know a few fairly wealthy students who got their laptop for free just for asking.

@RHCivil Is that figure in merit alone or met+aid?

Many colleges just offset the need based aid with merit awards, and it doesn’t end up reducing your overall cost of attendance. If you can’t tell what they do from their website, email their financial aid office and ask them about it.

That is referencing the RH merit scholar award and RH grant. (Free money)

Yes… but is it free money if you are also getting need based aid, or will they reduce the need-based aid by those amounts? That is what many colleges do. Not sure about Rose, the OP would have to ask.

my son is starting tomorrow and had a 27 ACT (math was pretty good but I can’t remember exactly). He was awarded $5k merit, we don’t qualify for financial aid. IDKY anyone OOState would consider the cost of Purdue vs Rose, no questions-Rose! But in state, it is a tough decision. I think Rose is a better cooperative learning environment vs the more competitive environment you find at universities. Rose has a very high % that get some kind of aid.
