Slacked off freshmen year and sophomore. I even had to go to a alternative school freshman year because of a mistake in 8th grade. Currently in my junior year which I started with a 2.833 GPA (sitting at a 3.0 now after first semester). Been getting all A's in my classes (which are all honors and one AP). I would like to know if I would still have a chance of getting accepted to Georgia Tech. I've talked with my counselor and they couldn't give me a real answer but "try hard".

By graduation if I were to continue to get all A's I would have a MAX gpa of: 3.41 UW

APs completed by graduation:
Comp Sci
Stats
Chem
Physics
French
Lang

Born and raised in Georgia
Race: Hispanic

Questions:
1. Do I still having a fighting chance if I were to get a decent SAT and ACT score?
2. If so, what would I need to get on the SAT and ACT?
3. Would GT notice I made such an improvement academically?

Hispanic will play a role, definitely will help. 3.41 is low, make sure you emphasize why your grades were low during freshman year.
You’ll need some killer test scores, maybe 2200+ / 33 +.
You have a chance, but I think it is a reach for you.

Yes I have looked into RETP, however I would like to ATTEMPT to get in directly to GT before I slack off and just say “I’m just going to go to GPC” like some of my friends. I come from a low income family, so I HAVE to go to a neighboring college. At this point it’s either GPC or GT. Not trying to come off as ignorant, but I would rather be surrounded by GT students who would make me strive to continue to excel academically, than be at GPC where there would be alot of influence to just get what is needed (which is an 3.0). I feel GPC would just set me up for failure once I arrive to GT my junior year doing RETP. Some might feel different about this, but that is how I feel about GPC.

More advice from other people is greatly appreciated.

Contact Kevin Gonzalez at Tech-He is in charge of Hispanic students in the admissions office. Contact the Hispanic Recruitment Team for advice from them to see what you can do to make your application strong. Definitely apply early action-you have better chances that way. One thing you definitely have to do is take calculus. Our GT rep told my hispanic DD that Tech wouldn’t event look at her application without calculus. She ended up taking pre-calculus online the summer before her senior year so that she could get into calculus her senor year. She was accepted to Tech early action.

Also visit the Hispanic student forum here on cc. Look under specialty admissions or click on my name to see some of my posts in the forum. You could get some great info there. Tech definitely looks at upward progression. During Sept of senior year they have a special hosted event called “Explore” be sure to attend that since the Hispanic Recruitment Team runs it.

Also look into whether you can get accepted to a summer program (the ones that are free or reduced cost or offer fin. aid.) There is a forum on cc for summer programs so look at what is offered. There are a lot out there like SAMS at Carnegie Mellon which are directed at the underserved student like yourself. Another is Purdue MITES. Also check out the website www.imfirst.org Look at the partner colleges and see the pre-college programs for some more ideas. Not only work at getting great grades but try to make yourself a better applicant through your extra-curriculars. Tech values EC’s a lot- robotics; CS community service are all great activities. event having a job will help you. Another good website for advice is www.getmetocollege.org and click on the high school tab.read all the newsletters and advice.
