Hey, I know that it is impossible for anyone to tell me exactly if I will be able to get into the University of Michigan or not unless they are on the admittance board, but I was wondering if anyone could give me a guess on if I could get in?
I got a 31 on my ACT and a 1320 on my SAT. My overall GPA is a 3.9, and I have a few AP credits as well as college credits that transfer over from summer classes I took at a community college. I am a member of the National Honors society, I am on the board for French Club, and I have been in another club since my freshman year. I was in a Student Leadership class for my freshman and sophomore years. I did JV cheerleading two seasons my freshman year and one season my sophomore year, and I was JV track my freshman year. I was also varsity cheerleading for one season sophomore year and two my junior year, as well as varsity track for my sophomore and junior year. I have had a part time job since my freshman year, and I also volunteer every Sunday. My mom attended the University of Michigan, and I plan on applying early action. Is there any chance that I could get in?
Thanks in advance! I’ve wanted to attend the University of Michigan since I was in middle school, and it is definitely my number one school and my dream school, so I would be ecstatic to get in!
If you are an in-state student you are competitive for every school but Ross, and a little below average for engineering. Raise your ACT by 2-3 points and you will be competitive for all of the schools withing Michigan. For OOS the chances are a lower.
Your chances are good. Keep your gpa up. Try to squeeze another point or two out of your ACT. Take AP classes that support your intended major. One concern I have reading your post…is that you don’t give any indication what your intended major is. The school you pick should support your major (which is easy at UMich, because they do such a good job in so many fields)…but really, you should be looking hard at at least three schools that support your goals, rather than making your goal a particular college.
You are among average applicants from in state. The in state admission rate is a bit below 50%. With legacy, you should have a better chance. If you are from OOS, it would be a reach for you due to low admission rate.
Hi, I’m an incoming freshmen at UMich and my stats were very similar to yours. I had a 31 ACT, 3.93 Unweighted GPA (4.33 weighted), 11 AP classes, my sister is currently attending there(idk if that helped), was the vice president for my school’s French Club, was secretary for my school’s Key Club, and was also in NHS. I didn’t have much extracurriculars except for my clubs and work, so you definitely have more than I do. With all this, I not only got in but got a huge scholarship so you definitely have a chance. Just try to raise your GPA and ACT a bit, take more AP Classes, and stay involved in your activities, and I think your chances will go way up! Good luck!
@cn2021, when you say you “got a huge scholarship”, do you mean need based financial aid?
If it is he/she is not recruited or music performance major, that scholarship got to be need based. ACT 31 is below admission average.
On the form they sent that listed the requirements to keep the scholarship and such, they said it was based on need based, merit, and my community service(I had over 2,000 hours over the 4 years of high school). It was a mainly OOS scholarship.
Nobody really knows if she will get it, but I would say she has an even chance to get in with her current GPA and 31 ACT. Her ACT score is right within the 25th-75th percentile (29-33) of the admitted students. Also keep in mind that an additional 26% are below 30! @cn2021, based on the income bracket you listed on your profile , and with a sibling already attending UM, your family EFC should be close to $0. Congrats on your academic record and extensive community service, which I’m sure was looked on favorably by both the admissions and financial aid offices at Michigan and elsewhere.
@prin08540 The mid 50 ACT last year was 30-34 already. Those below 25th percentiles are likely instate, music or sport major, athlete recruit, with legacy, etc.
My act was 28 and my college gpa was a 3.6. [I applied as a transfer with 60 credits] and I was accepted.
from what I can tell it seems you’re way more qualified academically than I was so I think your at least fairly competitive as far as that is concerned.
I’m sure my saving grace was the fact that I had internships and other field experience that made me stand out as someone who was more than just a student.
Good luck though! you seem like the kind of student who is likely to be accepted to UMich
Yes, but you were a community college transfer student, correct? Different assessment from freshmen admissions. Obviously, the original poster has a chance, but it’s important to be realistic about an unhooked OOS applicants chances.
Hi guys, I’m thinking of applying for transfer in my junior year. Can you tell me if I have a shot or not? I’m applying to the college of business.
I’m a LGBT Asian woman from a middle-class family. I am currently attending a community college in Michigan as an OOS student.
College GPA: 3.945
Number of credits: 65, but I think only 62 of them are transferable
Major: Marketing
Minor: Possibly Psychology?
EC: Honors program (for which i serve as the first international liaison ever and also an ambassador), founder & director of the program’s orientation project for international students, member of PTK (I got offered the Presidential Scholarship too), Vice President of a LGBT ally club, tutoring students on campus, percussionist in a community band, core member of a national charity organization’s marketing department (as a high schooler), member of my high school’s leadership club.
Letter(s) of Recommendation: 3 from my psychology professor, my economics professor and my employer at the tutoring place. They all basically said that I am very bright and extremely diligent.
Essays: I work very hard on them and have them checked and proofread by the writing fellows. Overall, they said I have solid ideas and made myself appear as a student with potentials and ambitions. I also take my culture and upbringing, my fight with homophobia and bulimia nervosa in for a more unique perspective.
High school GPA: 3.44 (unweighted). I have an Associate degree instead of a diploma because I cut high school short to do GED.
SAT: 2010 (taken in 2014)
I am very anxious. I have been reading threads about transferring to U of M dating back to 2011 and it seems like even the best people got rejected.
@irisfaefire Are you staying for another year at CC? I may be too late to the party, but I feel I can give some advice if I am not. I just transferred into the University of Michigan - Ann Arbor last semester from a community college. I had a GED prior, absolutely no high school record, and had just obtained my Associate’s Degree. I was President of PTK, President of Mu Alpha Theta, and a president of the chess club. I maintained a 4.0 for all 81 hours of coursework I had completed. When I applied to Umich, among other schools, I was accepted. My essays were self-written and not peer reviewed. I think, in terms of preparation, you are better off than me.
- I wish you best of luck!
what if she isn’t an in state student? What if she’s an international student?
