Hi,
I’m a upcoming sophomore in high school (Just finished my freshman year). I never had anyone to help me with college, and my school counselor doesn’t really help that much (I’ve gone to her multiple times, always leaving without answers). With that said, much of the information I have gained about college is self learned and because of this it wasn’t until later in the school year that I realized how much I screwed myself over. It was late April and I hadn’t applied, or signed up for, any summer programs. Currently the only program I am doing over the summer is a college course through Regis University (Undergrad in CS). I feel like if I don’t do anything else this summer, it will look bad on college applications. At this point it is to late to apply for anything educational (i.e. summer camps). With this in mind, should I just try and pack my summer up with volunteer hours? I’m sort of lost as to what I should do and time is clicking away. Any help is greatly appreciated.
Don’t stress! Your summer plan sounds just fine. Anyways, the most competitive programs that really stand out on applications are mostly only available to rising seniors. Colleges just want to see that that you’ve done something productive with your summer. Even if you just got a job filling grocery bags, that still looks good. But taking a college course and doing community service is an excellent way to spend your summer. And honestly, it probably looks better than going to an expensive camp. I think your summer sounds productive.
Also just a side note, don’t “stuff” your summer with community service hours. Volunteering is not just a way to boost your application, but also a way to give back. Try to find a position or organization that ties in with your interests, or is at least something you are very passionate about.
Its hard for freshmen to get into alot of summer stuff, so do what my son did his freshman year. He worked at a food pantry, and it lead to a leadership role there(volunteer) through-out his 4 year high school career. Between that and things like National Beta, Honors etc, his volunteer stuff was covered. ALSO, study NOW, all summer for SAT and ACT and take them in the fall. That’s how you get good enough so that by the time PSAT tests( Jr. Year) come around, you get a great score and scholarship/opportunities. My other son did same thing, but with the Humane Society, you get the picture. Good luck.
