<p>One school I'm applying to.... UMASS Amherst says that a recommendation is optional... Is it okay if i just add a page that is my rec, without an envelope or anything... Also am I supposed to staple my essay?? And lastly are you really supposed to have your s-s number on every single page of the app?</p>

<p>Why isn't anyone responding??? It is a simple question I'm sure you all know the answer.</p>
<p>I believe my counselor sent my recommendations in without an envelope. I stapled my essay, and I had my s-s (this may be the only crucial issue) on every page. I don't really think that there's a one and only method, however. For the most part, the adcoms care more about the content than technicalities like this.</p>
<p>The "technicality" of placing your SSN on every page is not to test your attention to detail but rather to make sure the right paper belongs to the right student.</p>
<p>That being said, email the admissions office or call them. Unless someone here knows for sure, go find out yourself.</p>
