I’m currently only a Sophomore in high school, but I am already working closely with my college counselor on college admission. I will probably have around a 3.6(UW) GPA, an a 1900 SAT score. Here are my requirments for the colleges I apply to.
-PREPPY
-Small classes( no more than 15 students in most classes)
-close-knit community (I want to get to know most people)
-Strong Academics
Sreong Political Science/Gocernment program
I would prefer that the student body lean conservative, but anything is fine as long as it’s not ultra-Liberal
I am considering applying to either Trinity College (CT) or Gettysubrg College ED
I am considering applying EA to
Patrick Henry College
Hillsdale College
Hampden-Sydney College
Sewanee: The University of the South
Wofford College
Is this a good list of schools to apply to?
Thanks!
Hampden-Sydney is a great choice for your criteria. Are you sure about Patrick Henry? That is mostly homeschooled kids and religious, ideologically conservative but not at all preppy. The alumni I know are all a bit quirky/nerdy/dorky - in a good way, but still, it’s a far cry from HSC and Sewanee.
@NavalTradition
I visited PHC this spring, and really liked it. I am a devout Episcopalian(conservative) so PHC would be a good fit(it has an excellent law matriculation) I can’t wait to visit Hampden-Sydney and Sewanee next fall. Can you please tell me everything you know about the schools on my list? What differentiates them from each other? I really want to know more about the “feel” of each campus.
Thanks!
@kdkhan - there is a thread titled “Southern LACs”. You will find details on some of your schools, Sewanee and Wofford, in particular, in that thread. There are other schools discussed in the thread, such as Furman, that you may want to research as well. I think you will fall in love with Sewanee when you visit. Sewanee has strong academics, amazing professors who interact with their students, and a friendly, tight knit community. The campus is breathtakingly beautiful.
There is a very good Greek scene and a good amount of conservatives at Sewanee.
“preppy” = you need to define what you mean. Do you mean in clothes or “coming from a private boarding school”?
I think you’d be fine at Sewanee, students often dress up for class, although students who can wear their gowns do (you need to belong to a special society, the order of gownsmen, to be allowed to wear them to class). http://static.sewanee.edu/og/faqs
W&L is probably a reach for OP. Patrick Henry is small and close-knit, but NOT preppy. It’s very conservative but a student body composed of mostly conservative Christian homeschoolers doesn’t scream preppy. Try that thread of Southern LACs but keep in mind, they might be reaches if you don’t get your SAT in the 2050+ range.
I am aware Hamilton and Bowdoin are preppy, but you’d have to increase your stats, however they do occasionally accept students with your stats so as long as you have a good essay, I’d say that they’d be reaches to dream for but not count on being accepted. It never hurts to try (I know a family member who was high-achieving like you with decent SATs and GPA, but a huge passion in her extracurriculars and originally thought she’d end up at a state school but now attends WUSTL, and was accepted to Amherst).
