Dear Committee Members,

I am writing this letter in hopes to be able to stay in the xxx program at xxx. During this past year as a freshman, I experienced some unfortunate events in my personal life. At the start of the semester, my grandfather was diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer. In late February, I was diagnosed with pneumonia and was incredibly sick for a month. I was in the emergency room twice during this period because of the severity of my illness. During finals week, my aunt was diagnosed with stage IV breast cancer. Each of these events highly disrupted my ability to focus on my studies, as I normally am able to do.

Although these events affected my studies, I should not have let them influence my education as they did. I have always been a very good student and although I hit a rough patch during spring semester, I know I am able to overcome my struggles. When I returned home for the summer, I started seeing a counselor to cope with these issues and will continue to do so when school starts in fall. Also, I plan to attend weekly tutoring sessions to ensure I stay on top of my studies. In addition to this, I have been in contact with my friend and fellow nursing student xxx, who will be a junior this fall, for advice on how to time manage and succeed in my classes. If I am granted readmission to the nursing program, xxx and I will be meeting regularly so I have plenty of academic help. I am also willing to meet with my academic counselor on a weekly or biweekly basis to ensure I am staying on top of my grades.

I have such a passion for xxx and my education is very important to me, so I hope you can grant me another chance to prove that. I am an excellent student who had an unfortunate semester and I can promise my grades will only improve during the next few years. Thank you for taking the time to read this letter, understand my struggles this past year, and regard the steps I have planned for the future.

Sincerely,

xxx
