Dear Financial Aid Appeals Committee,

I am writing to ask to have my financial aid reinstated. I realize that I made mistakes in the past jeopardizing my education. I take full responsibility for those mistakes. I would like to share with you the circumstances that caused my education to suffer and what I am doing differently today to ensure that it will not happen again.

For the last eleven years I have been diagnosed with bipolar affective disorder. Over the course of that time I was unwilling to accept my diagnosis because of the stigma attached and I was in denial. Therefore, I did not pursue any professional treatment. This attitude proved unsuccessful regarding my education. I withdrew from two semesters and failed two classes when I allowed my symptoms to become unmanageable. Not only has my illness negatively impacted my education but it has also affected other aspects of my life causing me to finally reconsider my approach. I have a new plan in place regarding my illness that will allow me to successfully complete my education.

Today I actively pursue preventive measures to ensure my illness does not become unmanageable. I take medication on a daily basis, keep in close contact with medical professionals, and am involved with peer-to-peer support groups. In light of all of this, I hope you consider my appeal and reinstate my financial aid.
