Is this a good topic?

As a topic for the Common App "A fictional character, historical personage, or creative work that has profoundly influenced you and why", I'm thinking about writing about MLK. I know that I can definitely write a fairly decent essay (imo) about him, since I can think of few other people who have influenced me to the extent that he has. My question is- would this be a good topic, or is it too overused?

If he has influenced you greatly and you can make the essay very personal then go for it. I’d urge you to say more about youself than reciting a bunch of facts & figures about MLK.

I agree. The people reading it aren’t critiquing your taste or anything like that, they’re seeing if you can effectively convey ideas in writing, and looking at your command of the English language. If MLK had this effect on you, then by all means, but if there’s something else you can write about that is more meaningful to you, that should be your topic.
