Is this competitive for U of T?

I’m an American student who is looking to apply to U of T for International Relations. My unweighted GPA is currently a 3.7 and I hope to improve it.

These are (what I think is relevant) classes I’ve taken or hope to take:

9:
Gov’t and Economics Honors - 91
English I Honors - 90

10:
English II Honors - 87
World History Honors - 85
French I - 88
French II - 89
Arabic I - 98
Creative Writing - 98
Journalism (taking currently) - around a 96-100 definitely
(Are the first two scores too low for U of T?)

My schedule next year (11):
French III Honors
Arabic II (last Arabic level)
Psychology DE*
Statistics DE*
Macroeconomics DE*
Microeconomics DE*
AP English Language*
AP US Gov’t*

(home school does not have these DE subjects)

12:
French IV Honors
AP US History*
AP English Literature*
AP European History*
AP Calculus AB*

  • taking the AP exam

I hope to take the ACT soon and score above a 30.

My last questions:

  1. I’ve heard ECs aren’t weighted but yet you can list them? How much do ECs weigh?
  2. How does this stack up for McGill?
  3. Would you say IR is stronger at McGill, or U of T, or equally as good

University of Toronto will look most carefully at your English grades. An 87 will be borderline for someone who is interested in international relations. I’d recommend that you work on getting that grade up. ECs weigh almost nothing.

U of T is stronger in IR. McGill only has a minor in international relations - no majors.

@bouders It was a very difficult class, will my other English grades (98 and 100 in English electives) and my ACT for Reading and English save me? Also, I’m taking two AP English classes and I hope to do well.

they will focus more on your grade 11 and mostly on grade 12 grades.

Would higher grades in other English class and a high ACT cause them to overlook it? Thank you btw @moneyp and @bouders

@balochi U of T won’t overlook your English grades in favour of Journalism or Creative Writing. As @moneyp said, your most important grades will be for grade 12, followed by grade 11. The most important out of these will be your English and math grades. Anything less than a high 80 on either will make your application borderline.
