Is this over the top?

I wrote my essays and everything; but I also have a project I made last year in creative writing about "objects that help us get through the day." I also have an essay on the objects within the box and everything.

But I remember somewhere on this board someone said senting materials in boxes and stuff is not a good idea. But then someone else said it's too overdone.

So I'm confused...bad idea? Or good idea? (If I'm going to use it for future essays possibly).

I don't entirely understand- both the statement "sending materials in boxes and stuff is not a good idea," and the statement that "it's too overdone," say that it's a bad idea. I don't quite see the contradiction.

More importantly- it is definitely a bad idea. I've heard admissions officers talk about students that send in bulky additional materials- it just bothers them, since they have a file for each student that they put all the application materials into. They don't like materials that don't fit into the file (like, say, posters or large photos) and they DEFINITELY won't like a box. Think about it- they're in an admissions office, where are they going to put it? Store it in a closet or under a desk until it's time to read your essay? They'd throw it away, and resent the extra work you tried to impose on them.

(The exception to sending additional supplements is if you're unusually advanced in music, art, or some other discipline, and you send them a CD or samples of your work to be evaluated by professors in the field. A box that goes with a creative writing piece really, really doesn't fit this description.)

There's nothing wrong with sending an additional creative piece or two if you feel they're very strong (though you shouldn't do it just for the sake of doing it- they should be examples that you feel really showcase a talent), but you should never assume the admissions officers will go well out of their way to accomodate your application.
