if someone has ranging scores like that...who cares...colleges dont really have time to look at other scores. they look at highest ones and that's it plus only your highest go on your transcript. and one thing relatiing to the 200 point increase....if that's not possible then why does testmasters put out a 300 point increase guarnatee or something.

You must get at the crux of the argument to make a point: What is competitive? Does competitive mean doing as well as the avg, admit or avg accept or doing better than those groups?

Hey guys! I'm a bit like some people on this thread. Ive got average EC's, I mean I have loads of stuff on, but I'm no international champ in anyone one of these activities. My school has a reputation for rubbish recs, my essay I dunno, it could be really good or really bad. My SAT scores are: 1500(750 each) in old SAT and 730 in Writing. I just gave Physics and Math Level 2 in June, and Im gonna give new SAT. My GPA is...well I'm an international so my GPA would be considered excellent here but looks really bad compared to what Americans get. Im also applying to MIT and Stanford, just to be rejected, but my real hopefuls are Georgia Tech, Cornell, Harvey Mudd and Rensellaer. RPI's my backup. Whaddya think my chances are at any of these. My SAT II's should probably be above 770.

Havaldaar I don't know um I'm sure others could give you a more accurate prediction of where you'll end up, but I do know it's harder for internationals to get in..especially at HYP..I don't know why, I thought they were looking for diversity .. and you probably wouldn't get financial aid so it should actually be easier to get in..but I've heard and read otherwise.
anyway I've just realized that I come on this site waaaay way way too much. I look at almost everything now to "increase the value of my resume". It's disgusting. I'm getting sick of college, I really need to take a long break. Sometimes I get so excited and then sometimes I feel like this. I think it's the fact that where you go to college can basically determine your life sometimes. Some people will have life at thier feet, some will regret their past decisions their whole life after college. Because really after you go there's no going back, it's not like high school where you can tell yourself "oh I can change at college". So that's probably why this whole process is so agonizing and why so many are freaking out over 2100. I mean, think about it, it's just a number. A measly number that makes people kill themselves mentally and sometimes even physically. I'm not saying that going to any ivy will change your life for the best 100% of the time, but I think where you go to college definently has an impact on your life in some way. Especially since that's basically it, most are completely on their own after college. sorry if this doesn't help anyone in particular just I dunno don't worry so much on a lousy number, no one has any idea of what will happen to them. Not to be pessimistic, but you could die before you even apply to college ..just take things easy man don't freak out if everyone tells you that you won't get in.

Relax!!!!!!!!!!! Im not that much into admissions. If i dont get in anywhere, Ill stay back and do something esle, Im not too worried, you should calm down yourself, ever tried Yoga?

wow...these ppl....DONT LISTEN TO THEM.....we have here a very very peculiar bunch of hs'ers because i just have never seen a combination of so many 1500+ or 2250+ kids in one place....its just statistically not possible when only 127 people got a 2400 on the SAT in march check NewsWeek official data)...its just not possible. Anyway, these people are b u l l s h i t....do not get discouraged at all....is 1400 m/v bad? YES??? Are you kidding me....so many people get in with that, and SOO many people DONT get in with 1500+. Its retarded...these SAT overachievers when u should overachieve in areas where you'll actually need it like GPA, extracurriculars, passion, etc. :rolls eyes and shakes head: ......its deplorable, how you are treating these people.

To the original initiator of this thread, your SAT is good, trust me. Its in the range of all the Ivy's, definitely. Anyway, other than that, which actually is more important in your life....how do you actually use your mind? I mean in terms of extracurricular activities, how are your grades in skool, how is your workload, your course difficulty, SAT IIs, passions?

not likely.. you can have a 2000 and below and still get in. This process is called a "killer essay". you have to write an essay that makes the reader open his mouth and break his jaws cuasing his mouth to open at such an enormous length that his tongue will roll on the carpet.

Bklyn2Cornell, sometimes the extra points on the SAT is the difference maker on the applications. While I agree that SATs are not the be all end all of admissions, there are just so many students who are loaded with extracurriculars, who are loaded with challenging classes, who are loaded with "passions". You say that a 1400 is good enough, but there are just so many 1400's; be realistic, if you want to enter an Ivy league school you must distinguish yourself from the rest, and because so many people have the same generic extracurricular activities, the extra points on the SAT essentially act as the tie-breaker. aim for a 1400+

i completely disagree with you...im not aiming for HPY, im aiming for other Ivy's and other schools that are not Ivy's, but to say that im not realistic is quite the opposite of what my college counselor told me, a consulting firm on college admissions told me, and a multitude of other people. Im not talking at all about what you call 'generic' extracurriculars. Im talking about REAL passions and focus on those things. Most people DO NOT have that. Most people are not creative, and innovative, and motivated, and inspired, and driven in LIFE. They are driven to get that 1600 or 2400. Im not talking about quantity at all....im emphasizing sheer quality and sincere passion. Most of us (including many many on CC) dont understand what that is. I do agree that you need to distinguish yourself....but you just completely are irrational when you assume that 10 points above someone else on the SAT 'distinguishes' you from another who has similar "passions." Thats flat out ridiculous. A 1500 means you studied your butt off and learned how to beat the test, nothing more.

Although I believe SAT scores (or slight differences thereof) CAN affect the admissions outcome at an Ivy, in reality there is virtually no distinction in real life between two people who got a 2100 and a 2120, or even a 2100 and a 1950. The only possible difference is with 2400s, because people who score perfect on, for example, the math section run the gamut from the math nerd who barely pulls off an 800 (like me) and the next Albert Einstein with almost limitless mathematical abilities. Remember, when it comes down to it, the SAT only measures how well you take the SAT.

Please read my comments more carefully, I said that SAT's are not the be all end all of college applications, but they really do help! How can you do you compare two people who are basically mirrors of each other? The SAT does it. Really, is it really ridiculous to argue that person y who does the same things as person x but scores higher on the SAT has a higher chance at getting into an ivy? no.
