I wanted to write about a student ambassador trip where I went to Hawaii and met the kupuna (Hawaiian elders) and what they taught me and how it influenced me to want to travel and learn about new people and cultures (I'm hoping to be an international relations major) Is this a good topic? If so, would throwing in a select few phrases I learned be memorable or annoying?

That sounds like a good idea. It has the potential to be a strong essay, especially because it relates to your major. I think throwing in a few Hawaiian phrases would make it memorable, if they fit into your essay. Don’t try to force them or anything.

Try to work in the word “humuhumunukunukuapua’a”
