Is Tucson really ghetto?

Well my main super safety school is ASU, and I always thought it was way better than U of A. I thought the campus was nicer, the location was better, the students were better, athletics and school spirit, and just about everything else.

But then I started actually looking into U of A and it seems like the best overall (not just academic wise). However my main worry is the city of Tucson. I heard it has a really big crime rate, and the city is really ghetto.

I don't want to live in a ****ty city, so how is Tucson. How does it compare to Tempe...where ASU is.

I wouldn't say it's "ghetto" but Tempe is a much nicer city. I visited both ASU and U of A and loved both. The problem I had with ASU revolved around it's size and lax admission standards. ASU is enormous and I felt like I'd get lost on campus. While the students I encountered at ASU were friendly and hot (very very hot), quite of a few of them didn't have much substance behind the pretty face.

I really didn't like Tucson much, but I didn't really feel unsafe their. Just be careful. It is nothing like the area that surrounds USC.

I'd have to second Worried Student. UA might be the better school, but I like ASU's atmosphere and location much better. That's not to badmouth Tucson though, both parts of Arizona are beautiful.

Although if you want a really beautiful place to go to school, it's hard to beat the University of Colorado-Boulder

Well I'm applying to schools in Miami, San Diego, Santa Barbara, and LA. And I want my safety to be one of the Arizona schools. I've looked into Indiana, but Bloomington seems too cold, too rural, and too boring.

I've always liked ASU better than U of A. But after giving U of A a second look, the campus seems pretty nice, sports and school spirit are stronger, and the school supposedly has a better business program.

However, location is big to me. So if Tucson is ghetto, I won't give it a chance, and then ASU will for sure be the safety school for me.

So any other opinions on Tucson?

Well, I think nowayjose misunderstood me. Despite not being too fond of Tucson, I still applied to U of A and not to ASU.

I agree with nowayjose's suggestion of applying to UC @ Boulder. Beautiful area, very nice school. Out of state tuition is quite expensive though.

Socal- check out University of Oregon. Unbelievable campus (like Indiana), solid academic reputation (particularly in business, journalism, the sciences, and psychology), fantastic sports teams, and a lot of school pride. The school isn't enormous either. They have 17,000 undergrads which makes it a perfect mid sized school. The school has lots of resources thanks to some generous donations by some of the schools very wealthy alumni, particularly Phil Knight (the founder of Nike) – the school is known by some as University of Nike.

My top two choices were U of A and U of O.

If you don't mind venturing out to the midwest, you might want to apply to University of Iowa. Awesome parties, great little college town, lots of school spirit, sports teams are well supported, and the school is 4 hours from Chicago.

This will all be a moot point if you get into UCSB (well it would be for me). The parties are insane, the academics are excellent, and the location is probably the best in the country for a college.

I love Tucson :) Great place. Lots of retirees so it's not all just seedy.

Yah I've looked into Oregon but it seems to have a big granola/hippie scene, and that is definitely not me.

I've looked into Iowa as well, and Indiana seems better, but I'm not sure I'm down with living in the Midwest.

And UCSB is amazing, and it is my #2 choice, after UMiami...Go Canes!!!, but anyways I would really appreciate your thoughts on U of A, as an overall school, and why it is better than ASU.

Thanks.

I’ll address this point first since I originally thought the same thing. I am pretty conservative politically and I was put of when I heard that Oregon was hippie. I decided to apply anyways, just in case I didn’t get into University of Arizona (which was originally my top choice). Then I visited the campus and completely changed my mind. A lot of the students at U of O are liberal, but the student population isn’t much different than UCSB, UCD, UCLA, or U of Washington. I spotted a few “hippies”, but they were few and far between. The people on campus that I talked to told me that the hippies usually don’t go to class and end up failing out. They are also not liked much by the rest of the student. Eugene is a great college town. It is much nicer than You should still apply. It’s an easy application to fill out and you might end up visiting.

Here’s what I wrote in another post comparing ASU to U of A
Academics- UofA- in some programs, ASU is better than UofA, but in terms of academic reputation as a whole, UofA is superior. ASU lets in almost everyone who applies but makes it difficult to get into certain programs once you are at the school. UofA is quite a bit more selective, but not nearly as difficult to get into the top programs. At ASU, you often have lower division classes with 600 people! If you are in the honors program, you would probably not be in classes of this size.
Campus: UofA- I liked both campuses, but UofA’s older brick buildings are very nice. They make you feel as though you are at a college with a lot of history. The facilities at both schools are outstanding. Both campuses are big, but ASU is huge (on almost 600 acres of land!)
Weather- UofA- at their hottest, there is still a noticeable difference between the two schools in terms of weather. Tucson is about 10 degrees “cooler” than Tempe.
Sports- UofA- there’s no doubt about it that UofA excels in basketball and has an improving football team. ASU’s basketball team is terrible, but their football team was pretty good this year (better than UofA’s)
People (I’ll divide this one into two categories)
Looks- ASU- the girl’s at ASU are the hottest I’ve seen at a college; they are even better looking than the ones at San Diego State. The girls at UofA are also excellent, but really can’t compare to the ones at ASU. The ugliest girl at ASU would be the hottest at University of Chicago or MIT.
Brains- UofA- while there are some who go to ASU for its excellent honors programs and generous scholarship offers, there are quite a few dolts at ASU. The students as a whole are more academically oriented at UofA. The mentality at UofA is “work hard, play hard”. There are people at ASU who think the reason they are going to school is to tan and get drunk every night.
Town- Tempe (ASU)- ASU wins in a landslide here. Tempe is one of the coolest college towns around. You are only about 10 miles (15 minute drive from Phoenix). There are so much to do in Tempe; great shopping, restaurants, bars – everything. Tucson is pretty much a dump. Right next to campus, there is 4th street which is where all the bars are located, but other than that, it’s not a college town at all. There is a lot to do on campus at both schools, but you don’t have a lot of outside options in Tucson. The restaurants are quite good in Tucson, but that’s about it. The police are really cracking down on off campus house parties at UofA, even using helicopters to find and break up parties.

You also have to consider the size of both campuses and the amount of personal attention you’ll be receiving. UofA has about 28,000 undergraduates, while ASU has about 51,000.

Both have their positives and negatives. I’ll leave it up to you to decide which school you like better. I would have seriously considered going to ASU if it wasn’t so big. As it is, I didn’t end up applying, but did apply to UofA.

www. tucson. arizona- us / Tucson is beautiful, moutains on all 4 sides , greenery, no highrises, no overpasses yet plenty to do, our own ski slope, great restauraunts, night life
Phoenix is more crowded, with more concrete, more major highways, not as much hiking, bike trails
Who ever said Tucson was ghetto does not live here. I would recommend a visit to both afterall some people like concrete cities and both schools are good choices
sorry I love Tucson and most who visit do so check it out first

Not only does someone who think Tucson is ghetto not live there, he has not left the cornfield from which he grew up in and seen ghetto. ;) (Or else, lives in Tucson and has never traveled anywhere but a cornfield.)

I live in Arizona and when my brother went to U of A we went there almost 2wice a month. IMO , I hated it. I like green, Tuscon is brown and it smells. Yes, like arizonamom said, up in the mountains it is really quite beautiful, but you will spending most of your time on and around campus.

Tuscon is not ghetoo, but imo it does no appeal to my taste.

Tuscon is about 450,000 to 500,000 people .......Phoenix is closer to a million and a half I believe....

You have pro sports in phoenix
we have the dbacks, coyotes, cardinals, rattlers, AND THE PHOENIX SUNS halla halla ( Steve nash MV3)

Not much else to do in tuscon besides partying.. this is coming from my brother

My brother got tired of the surroundings by SOPH year and transfered to USD

IMO asu> than U of A............. but i would never go to either of them

Arizona is a great state though, but I think tempe is far better than tuscon

I apologize for the "smell" part of it.... it was a bit sarcastic... Tuscon is just not pleasant imo..... doesnt mean its not to other people

some people love Tuscon

..........

Just curious, did you end up applying to U of A or ASU?

Been to Tuscon twice (I live in western PA), once for 6 days in 1996 and once for 3 days in 2001. I was surprised but I loved it. I don't know what might have transpired since then, but it definitely seemed like someplace I would have moved to at the time.

For a real college town hippie feel, sort of with a Grand Canyon twist, we also found ourselves in Flagstaff for a few days in the fall of 1999, and really liked it there too, home of Northern AZ.

Well since I'm only a junior I haven't applied yet. But I'm planning on applying to ASU in July.

no colleges are ghetto.

In-laws live in Tucson. Parts are pretty (the foothills area) and parts are ... dull. Crackerbox houses with sump pumps on the roof. Stone yards with weeds and saguerro cacti scattered about. But the houses in the foothills are very pretty, and the spa/hotels are great (great deals can be had if you are silly enough to go in the heat of summer, like we did). If you do go to Tucson, be SURE to eat sushi at Sushi Ten. Ite one ither Bradway or Speedway. Its not as good as it used to be before it got sold, but it's still GREAT sushi.
