A current student we met at UC Davis said that Davis didn’t allow (or perhaps allowed to a lesser degree?) AP tests to count toward GE credit than other UCs. The rationale was that since some high schools had a large offering of AP courses and others not - that no one should be able to get ahead for having completed AP courses in high school.
Our older boys got a lot of credit from their 12-13 AP tests and it’s helping them complete their UC in slightly less than four years. So it would be a mark against Davis if they gave less credit for completed AP courses for our youngest. Does anyone have insight into the credit given for AP tests by UC Davis relative to other UCs? TY
If you look at the UC Davis AP chart, there is a blurb at the bottom that says:
“Courses for which AP credit has been granted may not be used as a substitute for courses required as part of the UC Davis GE requirement; see Advanced Placement (AP) examinations on page 35 and page 42.” So you do get the credits toward the 180 needed for graduation, but not to fulfill GE requirements, from what it sounds like.
at UCB, for L&S, it’s the same, none of the 7 breadths (GE) required can be fulfilled by AP. In the CoE, they do allow up to 2 AP classes to fulfill the 6 breadths required.
My daughter attended Davis. Her AP credits were used as general credits, so when she had to register for classes, she was given advanced status. After having to take some prerequisite classes, she was glad she did because she said that in no way did the AP courses cover what she needed to know.
Thanks for the clarification.
I think at UCSD the AP can count toward breadth. For example for Warren college if you had psych as one of your “program of concentration” (six courses required) and you took AP Psych then one of the six would covered.
Just a note that UC Davis along with some other UC’s like UCLA no longer give advanced status or early priority class registration for in-coming Freshman based on AP credits. The rationale being this gives all students equal footing since some HS’s do not offer AP classes. Maybe this caused the confusion regarding AP credits and fulfilling GE requirements. My son got 38 AP credits at UCD but none helped with his GE’s and this was 5 years ago.
yeah, as for my kid at Berkeley, the only useful AP classes has been AP Calc BC (his 5 let him skip the 1-year Calc sequence) and AP Eng Lit (his 5 let him skip out of the 2 English Reading and Composition classes). Everything else is just credits only towards graduation, no subject or placement credit.
On the other hand, just by sheer luck and coincidence I suppose, his language classes in HS were all dual-enrollment classes, and by virtue of the college credit, he got credit for his International Studies GE breadth.
This page may help you compare how AP credits can be used at the different UCs. http://admission.universityofcalifornia.edu/counselors/exam-credit/ap-credits/davis/index.html
Registration pass times are based upon units completed at UC Davis, not AP credits. Registration assignments are random the first two quarters of freshman year. Pass times based on units begins Spring quarter of freshman year.
