Is Week of Welcome (WOW) just for students or is it a family thing?

My mom wasn’t able to make it to open house, but she still wants to see the campus before school starts in the fall. Should she go to WOW week, or should we just go up on our own and schedule a tour of the campus?

WOW is for students only I believe, but there is a SOAR orientation thing over the summer that is for students and family. That would probably be a good time for her to see the campus.

Week of Welcome (WOW) is exclusively for students. This is YOUR time to get to know your campus, your town and the surrounding area (beaches, hiking, etc.) Also, you’ll meet a TON of students, but find a small “family” in your own WOW group (other kids from your dorm.) Right before Fall Launch and after Move-In, it’s time for parents and kids to say their good-byes. As a mom, it was bittersweet leaving my daughter behind. And, I have to admit, I would have enjoyed joining in all the fun! But, alas…that’s not the way it works!

Your mom should definitely to go to SOAR. They have a wonderful and thorough program for both students AND parents. She’ll have a chance to acclimate to the campus as the parent of a new student, finding answers to all the questions she has. They take the parents under their wing and help them with the transition of letting go of their young adult. And, for many like me, it will be the first time for an empty nest. I really hope your mom can find a way to attend SOAR! I’m not sure of the format now, but we spent the night before so we could be up at campus bright and early.

Is WOW week for transfers as well as incoming freshman?

Is WOW during move-in week?

Yes transfers are included.

I believe so. You start on a Monday and then begin classes mid-next week.

Thanks for the info, 2leashes! Ya I think we (my mom and I) decided we are going to go up for SOAR. Then I will probably go up for WOW by myself :’) haha I think my mom is going to have a harder time then me. My situation is a little bit different. I’ve been taking classes at community colleges for 5 years now and I have lived on my own before. I’m 25 years old, but due to certain circumstances I had to move back in with my mom for a while. But that doesn’t mean it’s not going to be hard when I leave! My mom has 4 kids, 3 boys and me, the girl. My brothers are all older than me and moved out ages ago, so I am the last one to “leave the nest”. My mom and I have a very strong, close relationship, so I hope she’s going to be okay when I leave…

ANYWAYS, ya so I think we’ll be going to SOAR…I’ve already told her about the awesome, new rec center and she wants to check it out! :)

How do we know when our kid’s SOAR is? I believe they offer it many different weekends. Do they assign you a weekend or what?

closetobroke,

Here is the link for SOAR dates

I just called the school and they said we will be getting an email around mid-May regarding information for SOAR and how to sign up for a date.

I can understand your situation and particularly since you’re the “last child”, even if you’re 25. It makes it more difficult since you and your mom are so close. But, at the same time, this will be a good transition for both of you as you make your way into the world. At least you’ve had some experience living on your own.

Yes, the Rec Center is definitely worth checking out! I know your mother will enjoy it and the campus, for that matter.

And, WOW is definitely worth it!

If you are for sure going to SLO, your parents can always come during PArents weekend (in October) to get a feel of the school. My parents didn’t like SOAR since it was a lot about orientation but parents weekend show how the school “Actually” is

I liked both SOAR and Parents Weekend. They each offered something different. I learned a lot during SOAR about the “innards” of campus and met some of the people who make it happen. Parents Weekend was more about casual fun for me. Enjoyed the Tail Gate BBQ and the football game, as well as mingling with other parents in a relaxed atmosphere. Also, spent time in my daughter’s dorm room. So for me, as someone who likes “taking it all in” and learning as much as I can about something, I felt SOAR was worth it.
