Hello all!
I was just wondering if anybody knows how WOW (Week of Welcome) works for older transfer students at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. I’m in my 40’s and I’ve been a local resident of the community my entire life, so I’m wondering how I will benefit from the program. I feel as if WOW is meant for younger students who are new to the area and have the desire to meet new friends. Due to my age, my peer group consists of groups that aren’t in their early to mid-twenties.
I know that WOW is now mandatory, but I’m just wondering if I can possibly just check in, check it out, and “check out” shortly thereafter. I’m interested in learning the logistics of Cal Poly, but “exploring” the city does not interest me. I did find SLO Days to be informative, however.
Anybody have any experience with WOW week at Cal Poly SLO, and how obligated an older student to fully participate.
Thanks in advance the insight!!
Luckily when I transferred in, it was not mandatory so I didn’t go. Every other transfer student I talked to did go and seemed to enjoy it - your leader would be a transfer as well. But I understand why you wouldn’t want to participate. From my understanding talking to previous WOW leaders (Freshman groups), they’re responsible for them the entire week from morning to night. I know some who really don’t stick to this though.
In your case I’m sure you can check in, talk to the leader than go about your own day. In SOAR, I left half way through because the information wasn’t terribly useful. Just show up the first day and talk with your leader so he or she can at least show you attended. Or maybe just write the school a quick email?
Welcome to Poly!
Thank you for the reply!
I think I’ll try to check in on one of the days, get my bag of goodies, and then pull a vanishing act when I get a chance. I don’t see myself parading around town with group that is half my age, though I can see how some may enjoy it.
