DaiViet, why in the world did you say 'I hope you guys don't mind that I join this thread' ???We don't have many people here,so welcome again.;)
hlvietlong:she is done with the SAT's,I suppose ;)
miaoling:I should have already started my application by now.Unfortunately,my SAT scores are unbelievably awful, which will prevent me from applying to top schools.I am now considering on what you guys regard as 'safeties'

@DaiViet: I didn't mean anything :D Just curious :D
This Nov SAT is awful :( I'm Ed-ing 2 to Colgate

Hah, I think I saw your scores. Why, they're not as bad as they seem. I for one will never make it to 700 in Writing. My formal writing sucks and sucks. How did you do it anyway:D Oh btw, hlvl is "he". Or am I wrong? *looking innocent"
Hlvl: man, everyone knows your plans. Your stats are all over the board:))

miaoling, when I said 'she' to hlvietlong,I was referring to you.
Colgate is out of my reach.:(

Don't be so discouraged, I bet essays can create miracles :)
Oh I hate new SAT :(

HiLine and hlvietlong: It is easier said than done, but don't be discouraged. SATs are important but they are not the only factors in the game of college admisions.

Essays are nothing of magic.
DaiViet,SATs are important in admission and EXTREMELY important in financial aid application.

HiLine: Does your high school set a limit of how many colleges you can apply? If not, apply to several colleges from different tiers. We all have "dream" college(s) which we want attend, but there are many excellent colleges here, including those considered as "safety."
Indeed, SATs can be extremely important for scholarships, especially for international students. However, many colleges will look at your entire application when they decide whether or not to give you a scholarship.
Also, it has been almost 10 years ago when I had to make decisions that you are making right now, so things might have changed.

I totally agree with DaiViet, Son Ho got into Williams with 1290 old SAT

DaiViet:I 'm from a Vietnamese high school,so there's no such a limiting.
As far as I know, low SAT = low financial aid in most cases, which is why SATs are so important.Do you know any 'safety' colleges generous with international students?
hlvietlong, did he get satisfactory financial aid?

HiLine,
I am not an expert, but if you give me the following info I might be able to suggest some good colleges for you.
1) Range of GPA and SATs
2) ECs (a lot, some, little)
3) Gender
4) Intended major
5) Desired student population size (large, medium, small) and location of college (east, west....)
If you like, you can send these info through private message.

@HiLine: Willy is need-blind !

hlvl: I think Williams came out need-blind after bro Son got there.
DaiViet: you're very kind, but for int'l students, fin-aid factors into school selection too. That's when the going gets tough. There are lots of good schools out there that wouldn't give away a single penny, or else make you contribute $20K/yr. So for me there's no safety. Reaches all the way.

hlvietlong:I knew, but I can't get in because you have already got admitted :D
As far as I know, colleges that offer need-based financial aid would evaluate admitted students' SAT scores,is that right?

Willy wouldn't accept me for my upcoming **** Nov SAT :(
Besides, I still think that the rest of your app package can save your life

A lot of colleges would take candidates' SAT scores into consideration for need-based financial aid .However, your TOEFL score is good enough, hlvietlong, while mine sucks!

But your SAT is good enough, while mine would suck !

Hi hlvietlong: I received my B.S. in biology from Yale and M.S. (also in cellular and molecular bio) from Stanford. I recently graduated from Dartmouth Medical School and now I am working as a post-doc researcher at the NIH (just for one year). There is no question that is too personal for me. As long as I have an answer, I will be very happy to answer ANY question(s) that you or HiLine or other students might have. If there is no immediate response from me, that simply means I am too busy working like a mad man in the lab, but I will write ASAP.
HiLine: I am still thinking about the colleges that might fit you well. Quick question: are you applying ED for Williams or Colgate and are waiting for the news? Also, I know it is too early to ask but will you continue on for MS or PhD later?

@DaiViet: I intend to work as a high school counselor/free advisor and look forward to a chance to work in IIE or any international educational organization. So which major do you think would fit me ?
I am ED-ing to Williams and EA-ing to Wabash and still waiting for their notification. If Williams reject or defer me, I will ED to my brother's college - Colgate

DaiViet:thank you for your enthusiasm.Quick answer:no,I am not that person, but I think hlvietlong is :) .The second question: yes,if I can get a good financial aid .
hlvietlong:you haven't known your SAT score,have you?
