Waitlisted. OOS. 3.88 UW, 29 ACT. Male
sorry to hear about the waitlists. How come this is the year with the highest number of petitions ever? added with that the waitlist process
What does waitlist even mean? Is that acceptance just applicant pool is too big or what?
How is your freshman year going?
Hi I’m new to this forum. Read your posts. Sorry to hear about the outcomes for your daughter and son - congrats and wishing him luck after all this patience
… IMO it seems very odd since their stats are so close. Wonder if because they both petitioned maybe gender related or perhaps your daughter’s essay stood out but still odd it seems.
A couple of questions if you can share… for merit, was in the Dean’s scholarship? If so can you share amount? Also you mention Hutton application… aren’t applicants automatically considered with application or did your students petition?
Thank you!
I’m thinking the total number waitlisted must be pretty high because just from our high school (in-state) I know of 4 boys (including my own) who were waitlisted. All 4 boys applied test optional, 3 of 4 boys have very similar stats (within 0.1 of each other) - 3.90-3.99 unweighted GPA, 4.3 ish weighted GPA. I don’t know stats of the other boy. I only know of 1 girl who petitioned and she was admitted in December. She was test optional with stats slightly lower than I mentioned for the boys (at least according to what she told my son). I’m pretty certain this whole wait list thing is new this year. I wish mine (twins) weren’t so gung ho on IU (2nd choices are Purdue or Miami of Ohio) because this would be much easier to just move on. BUT, they also aren’t willing to take the risk of going standard admission because they are very set on pursuing a business degree so would be stuck without the degree they want if they didn’t meet the bar after freshman year. April 26th is a real challenge without wasting money elsewhere to secure a place in line for housing at Purdue (April 15th priority deadline) if they happen to get admission from the waiting list. Hmm…lots for them to consider.
Son was rejected. OOS, 3.9uw, 4.1w, 1360 SAT, solid EC’s and essays (or so we thought), offered ~$6k in merit money. My biggest disappointment was with IU’s over promise on their webpage where they explained the review request process.
“If you do not meet the admissions criteria or missed the November 1 application deadline, you must request approval for direct admission to Kelley. This is called a review request and we encourage you to make the effort—more than 65% of submitted requests are approved and the process takes just 10 minutes to complete.
The middle 50% of approved review requests for fall 2020 were:
- GPA: 3.70 to 4.0
- SAT superscore (Math and Evidence-Based Reading & Writing): 1290 to 1390
- ACT superscore (Composite): 28 to 32”
This “insight” by the admissions team was more damaging then helpful. Without it, those on the bubble may have pushed harder to take the SAT or ACT again with the hope of scoring above the 1370/30 threshold. Regardless, they obviously messed up and underestimated the amount of direct admits (without needing to fill out a review request) that they would receive this year and, as a result, were not able to approve anywhere close to the 65% of submitted requests that they suggested. I would expect that they will raise the bar next year with direct admits needing an even higher SAT score and GPA. I understand there are no guarantees, but I hope they learn from this and do a better job of managing expectations in the future.
Congratulations to those of you that got into Kelley. It really is a fantastic school and program. I am an alumni so I speak from personal experience and would highly recommend Kelley to anyone.
We don’t know this yet.
Raising the direct admit criteria makes sense and it was rumored IU would do that this year but never materialized. Maybe for Class of 2024, time will tell.
I’m confused as to what they actually did or did not take into account when making an admissions decision. When I called to ask if my son should turn in his senior year 1st semester grades, I was told by the admissions no need bc once they got into IU the only thing that was looked at for petition review was their essay. I was told that test scores and GPA as well as class schedule was not even evaluated. Seems hard that they were able to look at that many petitions and only evaluate based on gender(maybe) and an essay. Clearly things changed for them this year, and like many colleges the number of applicants was unexpected. OOS son waitlisted and heartbroken(like so many)
Yes, of course, we don’t know this for sure yet. I’m making assumptions/predictions based on my experience and those that I see on this forum. However, I will gladly wager with anyone that wants to take the over of +65%
I would say they definitely considered your gpa and test scores based on this from the review request website:
“Fill out a review request to be considered for Kelley direct admission. The request will autofill your GPA and test score (if applicable), and allow Kelley to access your transcripts. You will be asked to answer one question in 250 words: What has been your most significant achievement in the past three years?”
My sons best friend was admitted last week. 1500 SAT 103 gpa, OOS. 10 AP’s. Leadership
My son waitlisted, 34 ACT, 101 GPA, Leadership, varsity athlete
they definitely looked at GPAs and test scores. The letter for the waitlist even indicates that they are going to be doing a comprehensive review of every applicant again after they determine how many available positions there are. This definitely was not just essay based on those that were rejected, and those that are waitlisted when you look at scores. I am trying to feel very confident and positive that once the students turn down Kelley because of other offers, we will get spots. My son was also deferred at Michigan and northeastern and we’re waiting on those. We have other regular decision applications. We’re waiting on as well. His best friend that was accepted Was also excepted to UNC…There are many kids like this that have a really big decision to make so I’m holding out. Hope that spots are going to open. I also think that Indiana’s reputation as a great business school is really starting to gain interest, especially for East Coast students who would have normally not apply to Indiana. That’s been the case here in New York.
They simply shared data from previous years. I don’t think that’s an over promise. It’s transparency. It’s a good program. It’s a highly competitive year, apparently. And when it all shakes out- people who are admitted to multiple programs will choose one. I’ve heard of kids with high marks and scores applying to 24 schools. That student may be holding space in a dozen programs. They will choose one.
Would you have the program admit more students than capacity.
That would be a terrible outcome. Professors don’t grow on trees.
The description of the application process was accurate. If you rely on the petition process alone- it’s not guaranteed. Hence the process.
And remember- it is not a dead end.
A good student can still be successful through other pathways.
I do agree with you about the pathway of standard admission. I feel confident that my son can get all “B”’s first year to get into Kelley. But, hopefully he will have other options as well.
May 1st. I wish we could make a decision earlier, but several scholarship decisions including Kelley’s for 1st year DA won’t be released until mid April.
by when do DA’s have to make a decision by if they are going to accept or not?
May 1st.
oh, how are going to dictate the entirety of the population who are going to attend
who were DA’s
seems like. ~1500 students are DA’s from Wisr
