IU VS. U of Minnesota-Twin Cities

<p>I'm a Minnesota resident, and I'm looking to get away from Minnesota next year. I've been accepted to IU, and am still waiting on UMN (which I think I have low chances of getting into.)
I have visited both schools, and I like IU 1000x more (UMN is fine I guess, but it's nothing special). However, IU is a lot more expensive and my parents aren't too into me being 11 hours away. My dad's all up in the USNWR ratings and is saying that IU is ranked below UMN and therefore I'd be an idiot to go to IU when I could stay instate and go to a "better" and cheaper school. </p>

<p>If im interested in pursuing something English related, would I be better off staying here and going to UMTC or would IU be a good option? Since I really feel like IU-B might be the place for me, would going to IU be worth the OOS tuition?</p>

<p>I’m coming at this from the view of a parent. You’re right. IU is a wonderful school and a great experience. Having said that though, for someone majoring in English I don’t think it’s worth the extra $12,000-15,0000 a year if you have another good, less expensive option. English is one of those areas that most colleges are good at teaching, and one can receive a fine education in many places. </p>

<p>Regarding the ratings though I noticed a few things. Minn went up about 10 spots this year while IU remained steady. Jumping 10 spots is unusual, and personally I find it hard to believe that a university the size of Minn could have improved so much in a single year. It’s just one more reason why I don’t put a lot of value in the ratings. Last year the difference between the IU and Minn rankings was a single point. Just my opinion, but the differences between schools a point apart are not significant. Again, my opinion, but I don’t think the differences between the schools ranked from 60 or so down to 80 or so are great. As someone on this forum, Calcruzer I think, has mentioned in the past, IU takes a hit in the rankings because it does not offer engineering. (We leave that up to the school farther north.)</p>

<p>Go to Wisconsin for the same price as UMInn and you get away too. But only five hours away.</p>

<p>That’s what I’ve always wanted to do, but I have no chance of getting into Wisconsin. Even getting into IU came as a shock.
I applied to Ohio State and UIUC, but I’m pretty sure It’s going to come down to IU vs. U of MN.</p>

<p>I’d give UW a shot anyway. I see some surpises all the time. They look at more than just numbers.</p>
