Originally I thought 500ish students seemed a reasonable number to have narrowed it down to, but now… because decisions should be out in only a few weeks (and they had months with the applications) it makes me lean towards assuming the amount of students who became semi-finalists must be a much lower number. Otherwise it would seem nearly impossible to select the winners in time.
Still no emails, good thing it is not finals right now, I am not sure if I could handle the stress.
same here, so much work to do & exams!
I really hope they narrowed it down enough to announce the winners soon! @muffinpoptarte
Does anyone know about having a job if your a JKC winner? Is it something that is required, or not allowed, neither?
@ForestryGuy Maybe @optimisticky can answer that, but I figure it doesn’t matter?
@ForestryGuy it’s not explicitly forbidden but gently discouraged. most scholars choose not to work and pursue research opportunities or unpaid internships instead.
keep in mind, the living stipend is determined by your university’s cost of attendance. so if your university’s financial department estimates that the cost of living in your area is below the median average, you may need to supplement your stipend with an income or choose to live in the dorms.
also, the stipend is calculated for the academic year (9 months), so the summer months must be either budgeted from that 9-month stipend or the scholar will need a second source of income.
many scholars go on internships during the summer and sublet their apartments if they live off campus.
i know it sounds confusing, but they guide you through it.
that being said, working scholars are still expected to maintain their academic performance, and must report their income because their scholarship may be adjusted to reflect their earnings.
Yet another day passes…
And im becoming more anxious…
To hear that im a winner…
Thanks @optimisticky. I work on a wildland firecrew in the summer to pay for whatever my financial aid doesn’t cover and usually a part time job during school. The firefighting is technically related to my field of study but I would love to be able to just concentrate on my studies during the school year, or at least have an internship that is work related.
Thank god for this forum. I thought I was the only one losing my mind. I am afraid to even tell anyone because of the pain and insanity I would feel if I didn’t win. I would probably die. I update my email every 5 minutes on my phone. I am always searching ht internet (how I found this site), and I have weird fantasies of what I would do if I won. I would want to be given a giant check just like on those tv shows with the award amount. I would take pictures and post them every where with my story, and my victory. Eye of the tiger.
From last year I have heard that people were welcomed at school with cameras, does this happen to everyone? Now I am image conscious and need to go to school looking a bit presentable everyday. I am always searching for a camera. If I see a person in a suit, I think, are they here for me? Is this the moment of truth? But no…not yet… not just yet. Soon…
Are they prepping us? Is this a test of wills?
I think yoga and meditation might be the answer. Also journaling and lots of therapy.
@graceunworthy Hey sorry about that, that must be very challenging to deal with. I am close to many twins…sorry bout that. I think its all about politics ya know?
Thanks @RlyOwl. I am also checking my email obsessively. I wish i could find out who else is a semifinalist in my school but no one likes to talk about those things. I talked to the honors program coordinator today and he said he only knows four. He was quite surprised that i am a semifinalist since im not in the honors program. I bet the others are in the honors program.
Well the website says early April is when notifications will be emailed out. So sit tight and take a deep breath because you have some waiting to do. How long can you hold tree pose for @RlyOwl?
I guess two weeks, plus the amount of days and hours they refer to as “early” April. Tree pose?! Lotus pose us more like it! Oh and add donuts to that! @ForestryGuy ahh
This wait is becoming nerve racking. @optimisticky did they contact you to ask for anything after you were selected as a semifinalist? If yes, how many week after?
I agree @graceunworthy. I talked to someone at my college yesterday and she was shocked because apparently no one else at my school made it to semi finals, and as far as she knows I’m 1 of 2 people out of all of the community colleges in my school system to be a semifinalist this year. #nopressure right? Ughh.
Check your E-mails, I just got one asking for secondary semifinalist applicant financial information. It’s all the same things that we already filled out but they want it again and it has to be in by Tuesday, March 29, 2016 12:00pm. Which also means that there will be no announcements until after that date, so you can try and relax until then.
Good luck everyone!
Happy for you @ForestryGuy! I haven’t gotten anything
did everyone get sent semifinalist emails at the same time last round?
Did anyone else get that email?
@optimisticky if we didn’t get an email is it safe to say we are out of the running?
