Jack Kent Cooke Undergraduate Scholarship 2014-2015

@adorse26 Do you think they are going to call us or email or give the information to our colleges to tell us, about the winning

@Georgemk, when I contacted them about when I would hear something I was told they were going to call winners and email everyone else.

If it’s like last year they notify the school and they have a week or so to notify you before they make the calls. There has been 6-7 winners at my school in the past and they were all notified by the president of the college.

@FutureNurse2018‌ what college are you from? My school has had a lot of past winners too. If they are doing it that way and I was to win, I don’t know if I’ll hear something from my school since my school is on break this week. And I figure they will start notifying next week since it’s the last full week of March.

I’m from College of Dupage in Glen Ellyn, IL. We are on break the last week of the month so I had hoped it would be next week ask well! After reading posts from last year it looks like it was delayed until the second week in April! I hate waiting! I know I only have a 2% chance and most of the people applying have 4.0 just like me! I however do not have all of the community service hours like most of you all have. Between working a full time job, a part time job, and juggling a family of 5 while trying to maintain my 4.0 is all there is time for!

@FutureNurse2018‌, I don’t think it was delayed last year I think they got results back in April because it was two parts last year. I know someone who won last year so from what she told me and friends I don’t believe there was a delay. I have a 3.7 and I’m not a leader for any clubs. The clubs I am a part of I don’t get to go to meetings, but twice a semester because of when my classes meet. I also only started volunteering again last year because I was having problems with a medical condition for a few years and had to stop volunteering. Hopefully, my life story makes up for it. You probably have a better chance.

Probably not! It said that most of the recipients are eligible for the pell grant and I am not. I make decent money now but will be quitting my fulltime job to start nursing school so who knows! Let’s just keep our fingers crossed and hope they just tell us soon!

@FutureNurse2018‌, I forgot they consider Pell Grant. I receive that so maybe I will have a better chance. I heard from a lot of people your life story in the essays pay a lot into the scholarship so maybe that will help you.

@adorse26 I hope at least we get to hear something next week. For all the winners I have read about, their schools notified them. So hopefully next week or who knows may be this week the schools will receive some form of notification.

@FutureNurse2018 From what you are saying, it means the schools first get the notification before before the winners?

That’s what I gathered from reading last years thread. They notified the school and a week or two later they call.

@FutureNurse2018 That is what I also notice from the videos of past winners. And it looks like the school always notify the winner before the call.

@Georgemk‌ it might be different for you since your school didn’t really know about the scholarships. I saw how the past scholars were notified too. I think they give the school the option of notifying students because I saw a few people last year only got a call and nothing from their school.

@Adorse26 I watch some videos and a past winner was emphasizing on holding leadership positions in clubs, and also organizing activities on campus, and taking honor programs. Did you hold any big leadership positions in any clubs. Do they have honors programs in your school?

@georgemk, I am a part of a honor society, but I am not a leader of any clubs because I work evenings and weekends also due to being at two different campuses taking classes I am never on one campus for long. I am a part of five different clubs, I have had my art displayed a couple of times, I use to write for the school newspaper, I volunteer for a therapeutic horse farm and I have won a couple major scholarships while at Montgomery College (they just don’t transfer since they are community college scholarships). I am not sure if you were talking about the honor society or the honor classes. We have three types of honor classes that are combined with a program, but I couldn’t join any of them. One of them is coming into a college from high school, another you have to be taking certain classes to join which I had already taken, and the last is for science majors only I believe. With what I mentioned above, and the narrative autobiography in the essay (mine is probably different for everyone’s) I am hoping that I get picked. Are you a leader of anything or do you have honor programs at your school?

@Adorse26 I am just a member of PTK, we don’t have any honor classes in our school. I did a lot of volunteer work, founded clubs, and assumed leadership roles but all in Ghana, so I don’t know if that will count. Over here in the US I did some presentations and volunteer stuff but not much, I’ve never receive any scholarship, only pell grants. I have a 4.0 gpa. If they consider my leadership and other activities I did in Ghana, then I will be fine either than that chances of winning is very slim. Is hard to tell what the selection committee really want from us, I mean their main focuse. From the past winners in your school, do you know what actually help them to win?

@georgemk I know one of the past winners and interned for different places in college and high school. I think her life story actually helped her from what I know of her and from what my past professor told me. I believe my past professor helped her write her essays. I can say my past professor helped me write my essays and told me that I would be a good candidate because she knew people who volunteered, were leaders, and had a 4.0 but didn’t win due to not really having a story were they had to overcome any challenges. I believe the past student I mentioned was originally from another country and had to work two jobs to help support her family.

@Adorse26 that sounds encouraging to me. It looks like there is no one specific area that the committee focus on, is like they consider all the pieces together to make a decision. I am hoping both of us or at least one of us will so that we can give all the details of what is actually involve in winning this scholarship.

@georgemk I would just like know either way if I receive it or not so I can figure out the next steps.

@Adorse26 I know at least by the end of next week the schools will be notified, so hopefully next week we hear something. I know how you feel, because this scholarship will bring a big change in plans.
