*January 2010 SAT Thread*

Taking the Jan. Test as well as a sophomore. 2100 hopeful. Will be disappointed with a score lower than 2000.

i’m taking the jan sat so today i took the first test in the old blue book. It raped me. The questions seemed so much trickier than the psat (got 212). Assuming a 10 essay and taking the median range, i got only a 2080.

Question for smart people - on word problems (ex - what is k in terms of n) with variables, I never try to write equations because to me they make no sense. Instead, I randomly plug in numbers for the variables and then test all the answer choices with my random numbers. This method seems to work but is so time consuming. How can I actually write equations???

I’ll be taking it and it is also my first.

I found this hilarous SAT video on youtube.

[YouTube - Hitler hates the SATs](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dS6Ag33fWlE&feature=related)

I’m also taking it! Is it wrong for me to hope you all do poorly for the curve to be more lenient? haha, just kidding…

^ I agree with the “lenient curve” part. Not the “us doing poorly” part though >=(

It won’t matter how we do on the test. The curve is determined by Collegeboard using previous “Equating” sections before any of us even look at the first question. So theoretically, everyone can score 2400 on one test administration. But I’m hoping for a harsh curve (and hence an easier test). It’s much easier to score 2400 (my goal) on an easy test with a harsh curve than a hard test with a lenient curve.

I’d like an easy math
Medium CR
and Medium Writing

@ 1253729: Ah, you have a very good point. Good luck on that 2400! :)

@ shaheiruddin: I WOULD like an easy Math section too! lol

I can score an 800 on math if I don’t make careless mistakes. So the easier the better:)

Thanks. Good luck to you too.

im taking it, its my first one :/

I randomly found this thread even though I’m not taking the January SAT (got an unexpected 2340 on December SAT)…I recognize a few of you from PSAT threads an such and want to say a couple things…

Although someone pointed out that colleges cite the Jan SAT as the last accepted one, aren’t the regular decision deadlines for many top school (Ivies, etc.) much earlier than Jan 23rd? Or do they let you submit them anyway? If the answer to the latter question is No, then this is another thing to consider when trying to “predict” the curve.

haha and silverturtle, no offense (this is meant in a good way), but you have WAY too much time on your hands! (if I’m correct, your info is from erikthered’s SAT curves?)

I want a easy CR, medium W, and hard M. No matter how hard M is I couldn’t be far from 800 :p.

I don’t see how you can predict the curve with any kind of accuracy. I mean you can hope and guess, but you can’t mathematically predict. The curve is determined before anyone even takes the test based on previous “Equating” sections. I guess you could try to deduce how the curve will be based on previous years’ administrations, but that makes no mathematical sense. Because the sample size is so small, it could just be random. And the level of difficulty or curve for each month is probably near-random with little to no correlation between corresponding months.

what is the date that these scores will be available? if anyone knows

Scores from the Jan. 23 SAT will be available Feb. 11, 2010 unless your scores are delayed for some reason.

^that’s great to hear. i thought they’d come out way later for some reason!!

Yep, from here: http://www.erikthered.com/tutor/SAT-Released-Test-Curves.pdf.

I’m taking it for first time. Realistically, I’m hoping for 2250+ (basically high 2200s), but I would love to break 2300.

Then I’m taking the ACT two weeks later. And hopefully either my SAT or ACT will be good enough that I’ll never have to retake.

Hi! I’m taking the January test too. I got a 2150 my first time this November, and I’m really hoping to improve by 100 to 200. But…to get a 2400, I’m going to have to aim for a 2500 even though that’s not possible (lol).
