Jefferson Scholar Question...

I am out of state applicant, does getting nominated for Jefferson Scholars and filling out the application at all increase your chances of just getting in???

Here are my stats by the way:

GPA: 5.1 W / 4.0 UW
3/496
highest coursload in the school with 13 AP's, taken every high level math class in my school as well

SATS:
M 700
V 680
W 660
1380/2040
SATII's
Biology E: 710
U.S. History: 760

EC's (very strong)
-started my own business
- youth governor of south carolina (Youth in Government state program, i lead over 1300 students from all over the state)
- Boy scout about to get eagle
- captain of number 1 speech and debate team in SC, several awards (nationals) btw
- vision 2020 for science, we are actually designing and marketing a science center for our city. pretty unique
- the rest are unoriginal

I doubt i will actually get the jefferson scholarhip b/c my sat's suck, but i think everything else is pretty good.

I don't know the true answer to your question, but I do know a girl who went to my high school last year who was nominated for the Jefferson. She may have advanced some in that process, but then was eliminated somewhere in mid-fall. When April 1 rolled around she found out that she was waitlisted at UVA.
To be honest though, her rank was not quite as good as yours. Your rank and rigor of courses taken is VERY good. Your SAT's are good, maybe not great but you should hold your head high! On the surface, your EC's look exceptional. Depending on things like your essays and letters of rec., I think you have a great chance for being admitted, and even for the Jefferson. Best of luck!

What state are you from?

Probably doesn't help a ton, but it's nice to get that nod from your school's administration.

I am from South Carolina, lol, yes an OOS applicant woohoo

Oh, and the person that I wrote about above--who was waitlisted, was OOS too at the time of application.

what were your stats and hers jimmyjam

The Jefferson candidate was in the top 3% of her class (as was I). She took about 9-10 AP classes and did very well in them (as did I). She was/is mousey to the point that I don't think she would have done well in interviews. Her EC's were very bland. Our high school can only nominate one student, and it wasn't me!
However, to contrast me from the above student. We were very similar in stats, but I had an EC with an international twist and leadership role. I wrote about my experiences regarding this in my essays and did a real good job IMO. She took the SAT's about 6 times and I know she hated her scores. On the 3rd time she got a 1900 and that was the last I heard. My scores were good, but not great. We are both OOS. I'm keeping it vague on purpose for confidentiality reasons.
When April 1, 2007 rolled around: OMG>>>I was accepted and she waitlisted.
A current acquaintance of mine from the deep south at UVA was a Jeff finalist. But she only had about 4 AP's, and is funny, smart, vibrant and engaging. As is obvious with the finalist status, she didn't get it either, but she was a much stronger candidate IMO.
Good luck.

The Jefferson SAT average, FWIW is 2243.

I'm going through the nomination process at my school now. I'm not really all that excited about it--I don't really want to go to UVA. However, if I'm going to UVA, it would be much better to have a free ride there.

I was talking with my GC and our director of Student Services the other day about this though, and they told me that only 8/35 were from VA last time. The purpose of the program is to attract bright people who wouldn't otherwise consider UVA--guess that means some OOSers. Hope this helps, and good luck.
