Jersey kid's questions about Wake

A bit about myself: I'm a girl, Chinese, and an atheist though at one point I attended a Baptist Church. I've lived in the Northeast all my life. I love big cities, but Wake Forest's campus holds an indescribable charm. I am delighted to have been accepted to Wake Forest's class of 2017. My questions are these:

Can I bike to class? Are there any bikers? Many? Few?

Is Wake uptight about religion? Basically, will my religious preferences be left alone? I don't mind religious people, I love open discussions about religion and other topics, but would rather avoid people who force their opinions on others.

Is there an archery scene? I recently took up recurve archery and I would love to practice at Wake.

I play a large Chinese harp- about 1' by 5'6"- anywhere I can safely store it and practice it?

What are the sororities like? Will I be ok as a non-Greek?

If I can bike, do I need a car?

Thanks for your time!

Hi @FatePlaysChess -

I would like to start off by saying that NJ is the second most represented state at Wake, so you definitely will not be alone.

There are few bikers but there are bike racks located by the main dining hall, which is very close to the academic buildings, and by the library. I’m sure there are others by the dorms as well, but I don’t bike so I’m not positive. You can walk almost everywhere on campus without a bike anyway; no academic buildings are more than a 10 minute walk from the others.

I personally do notttt find Wake to be religiously suffocating. Most people here are Christian but no one is really “in-your-face” about it. I don’t really think this is something to worry about.

I am truly not sure about this but I have not heard anything about archery at Wake.

You may be able to store it inside the arts building but again, I am not really sure. My friend who plays the cello stores hers there but she plays in the orchestra.

Each sorority is different, but about half the girls on campus are not Greek. You will be able to find a niche in or outside of Greek life.

Unless you live off campus (only seniors) you will not really need a car!

PinkCupcake is totally right about everything. One more note on the harp, there is a harp in the music department and if you cannot bring your own, you should be able to get a key and practice on the departments.

id just like to add that wake does have both club and varsity archery. varsity does do a little bit of traveling. And like pinkcupcake said you really dont need a bike at all. you’ll probably be living on campus for at least 3 years, and the residence halls are really close to all the buildings. You can literally wake up 15 minutes before class starts and still get there early. As you might expect from a school in the middle of the bible belt, the majority of the students are Christian, but they dont wave it in your face or anything. A good number of students do go to church, but many more prefer to spend their sunday morning sleeping off that hangover (even if theyre not hungover, they’d still prefer to sleep). Dont worry about fitting in, there are a TON of kids from jersey. I noticed way more license plates from new jersey than from my home state. I’m from south carolina.
