So I've finally made the decision to put Jester as my number 1 housing option, primarily because that's where the majority of the freshmen will be and I want to be in the middle of that. Now I just need to make the decision between East and West. I've heard East has more renovated rooms but less connected baths. West, on the other hand, has less renovated rooms but a higher chance of getting a connected bath. Plus all the food courts are in the West building. Are these true, or have I been misinformed? And which do you think is the better dorm?

Can you even choose which one you want?

Yes you can choose.

The food courts are not in the “west building.” People need to get this part straight:
There are 3 buildings that make Jester.
- Jester East - Dorm detached from jester center
- Jester West - Dorm attached to jester center
- Jester Center - Area with post office, classrooms, food courts, tutoring, etc.

If you really want a connecting bathroom over renovated and new furniture (and renovated community bathrooms), then take Jester West.

Yes jester west is “connected” to jester center. Jester East is not isolated in the middle of nowhere. It is about a 10-15 second walk from Jester East to jester center. I’m biased toward Jester East but here are my opinions on why you should choose it over West.

1) There are more floors in West, more people in elevators, longer wait times
2) Yes they have more connecting bathrooms, but is it worth getting an “old, degraded” connecting bathroom?
3) If you don’t get a West connecting bath, then your room won’t be nice either (in my opinion) - you have the “couch” beds, less desk space, dark hallways, and an old sink.
4) If you go to Jester East, there is a high chance you will get a renovated room with new adjustable height beds, new sinks, new connecting/community bathrooms
5) You still can get a connecting bath in Jester East, and then that’s the ultimate jackpot in my opinion. The “connecting bath” wings of Jester East also have a “hidden/private elevator and entrance”
6) Yes you have to walk outside for a few feet to get to jester center and the food. Is that honestly a dealbreaker?

Also I’d like to add:

When people say a dorm is “loud,” it does not mean you hear people yelling, playing video games, screaming, and cant sleep. None of the dorms are actually “loud.” The hallways with the rooms are dead silent with the occasional 2-3 people walking by just talking normal volume. Now the lobbies and study areas, that’s what everyone means when a dorm is “loud.”

Jester is the “loudest” simply because of Jester Center and the large study lounges where most people are. It’s not like someone is going to hold a long, loud conversation in the small hallways anyway.

The dependably periodic screams of death from any of 3 of my neighbors would beg to differ. I fully agree with everything else he said but it’s really luck of the draw when it comes to loudness of neighbors. The closer you live to the elevators, the more you’ll hear people in the halls too. Anecdotal evidence shouldn’t be taken too seriously, but here in Jester West, I can hear a video game induced yell at least once an hour. Normally one night a week I can hear music from neighbors and there’s someone here that likes to knock on doors as they walk by.
I don’t want to scare you because I absolutely love Jester and this was only one experience. There are people that come back to live here every year.
But again, I agree with everything else ace said.
