JFK to Port Authority

Hello Cornellians,

I'm an incoming international student. I couldn't be more excited coming to New York!.

Here's the question. From JFK, most students normally take bus or flight from Newark to Ithaca Airport?

The flight schedules I've been checking so far have 9 or 10 hours connecting flights from Newark to Ithaca. By the time I'd land in Ithaca, it'd be around 10:30pm and definitely I cannot check in to Campus house. This flight option left me with bus service.

Right now, I'm thinking of taking bus from JFK to Port Authority bus station, from there, I'd take Shortline or Greyhound bus bound to Ithaca. Is it a good idea? If it is feasible, is it possible to bring 2 luggages (23kg) from JFK to Port Authority bus station by bus?

Thanks a lot in advance. I would really love to hear my future Cornellian's suggestion. Since Ithaca will be my another 5 or 6 years of my life.

Thank you

Look into the Campus2Campus bus, which leaves in front of the Cornell Club on E. 44th St three times a day (6:30a, 12:30pm, 6:30pm) and will drop you off either by Sage Hall or Mary Donlon. You can take the Airtrain at JFK to the Jamaica train station and switch there for eithr the subway or the Long Island Railroad into Manhattan. There is plenty of room underneath for luggage.

or, there’s JFK -> Grand Central shuttle busses (I think $15 one way), and the Cornell club is right around the corner to catch the bus.

Also, you could go from Grand Central to Port Authority rather quickly by either cab or taking the S (shuttle) subway. From there, go to the shortline ticket office and get a bus ticket to Ithaca that’ll take you right to North campus.

You can get from JFK to Port Authority by taking the A subway, which doesn’t require any transferring, but it’s about an hour ride. Assuming you’re not riding the subway during rush hour, you should have plenty of room for luggage.

i work near airtrain/subway in queens. 2 large suitcases from airtrain to subway really is one heck of an undertaking. Not familiar with bus to Grand Central- but as I am sure gomestar is correct-- His advise makes the most sense.
-direct bus to Grand central and then Campus bus by Cornell Club.

if timing does’t work then take a taxi to Port Authority from Grand Central and take Shortline/coach bus to Ithaca. Coach bus goes directly to campus. Greyhound takes you to bus terminal in Ithaca not directly to campus. (at least that was how it was a few years back).
Trust me- I am familiar with air train terminal in Jamaica. It’s a real schlep (NY expression) to get from Jamaica to Manhattan via subway with alot of luggage.

I’d try and take a bus from the airport. Despite the fact that it’s only one ride on the same subway (E line) to the bus terminal after the airtrain, 23 kg is going to be quite a nuisance to lug around on a likely populated subway car. Also, if Campus2Campus is too expensive and/or inconvenient for you, do Shortline, which is much more frequent and less expensive. Don’t bother with Greyhound. If I’m not mistaken, it doesn’t even go onto Cornell’s campus (Shortline does).

link for the JFK->NYC bus. Apparently they also drop people off right near Port Authority as well. Would do if you were doing the shortline bus and not Campus to Campus.

Wow, thank you guys!

Thanks cornellpezra, Campus2Campus bus seems a decent choice if I could land at JFK well before noon in order to reach Cornell before the Campus apartment closes. I’m looking into the flight schedule for that one.

Gomestar, thanks a lot. Shortline bus runs frequently from NYC to Ithaca daily. I’m looking into that too.

pwcornellian2013, marny1 and Islander4, yes, that’s what I’m afraid of. Juggling with 2 big luggages in public train is not what I’d expected in someday traveling to New York. I need to learn NY expression as well. :)

Thanks a lot my cornellians in CC. I got more info for my traveling plan. See you around.

just another idea to think about-
from JFK-- fly into Syracuse (Jet Blue goes JFK/Syracuse direct) and then do airport limo service from Syracuse to Ithaca. It’s probably an hour to 1 1/2 trip from syracuse to ithaca. My daughter never did limo service from syracuse airport, but I do think it is available. Maybe someone on these boards can offer some info.

i also think the bus service to Port Authority or Grand Central and then bus to Ithaca is a workable approach. Much better than taking subway into Manhattan. The E train is always crowded and it is not going to be a relaxing ride at all.
Good Luck!
