I just got off the phone with a lady from the JHU admissions office and got some surprising (atleast to me) news. I was asking about whether or not sending second semester grades (I'm applying for sophomore standing) would be advisable since they wont come out till around May 15th and they would probably be sending admissions decisions by then. Her response was that, they dont even really start looking at transfer applications until then, and decisions wouldn't be sent until the end of may, if not early June. Thats so late...

Anyone else surprised?

Atleast they see a full year's worth of college work and gives those of us with lower GPA's a chance to bring them up. Still, so much waiting.

Unfortunately, Hopkins is a bit late to notify students in comparison to other institutions, however, I know of a couple of schools who conduct transfer application reviews/send out acceptances later than Hopkins, such as Northwestern and Emory. Freshman admissions plays a big role, as the size of the applicant pool, the time it takes to review applications/send out acceptances, then wait for admission deposits, etc., all impacts the commencement of the transfer application review.

It's a long, wretched wait, so I'd suggest finding something productive to do after classes end for the semester, such as going on a short vacation, taking a cooking class, to take your mind off decisions. In addition, try to avoid CC, misery loves company, lol.

And, as you mentioned, on the flip side, it gives you a bit of time to send in additional college work/an updated transcript. :)

me.
initially it was my first choice, but i'm leaning towards georgetown or cornell moreso these days..
we'll see what happens.
good luck to us all.

JHU is my first choice...but I plan to apply for either fall 09 or fall 2010, so I can finish my surgical tech program with the hospital I'm working for. Have any of you people tried to go onto the Hopkins Forums? They have tons of info there. I just hope to get in when I apply..Good Luck!!!

You should receive a postcard notification once your items have been received; Hopkins will only contact you if you are missing something, (which, considering we are already into May means they should have contacted you by now if you were missing a transcript, recommendation letter, etc.).

If you are anxious and want confirmation that your materials have been received and/or are being processed, you can contact the Admissions Office over the phone, or via e-mail, to verify this information, like Tennis did. :)

Be patient, the wait, hopefully, will be worth it!

Look forward to seeing some of you guys in the fall! :D

guys help me out here, I REALLY REALLY REALLY want to go to JHU. Its one my top-choices. However my hs gpa is not good. So if I transfer for a junior position what effect will my hs record have? Further what does JHU look for in their transfer applicants?

Get the highest GPA as possible at your college (which is?)

They do not require SAT scores, but if you have great SAT / act scores, I would send them

Significant EC's--> things related to your major, any sports / instruments, volunteer work, things that make you stand out as an applicant, leadership positions at school related things (clubs) or non school related things

Get to know your professors so they write great recommendations

Spend time on your essays and convey a clear and logical reason for your desire to transfer to JHU. Why JHU specifically? How will going to JHU help achieve your career goals?

p.s. Ask Tanya922, since she was accepted to hopkins as a transfer and now goes there!

From my experience, I've learned that transferring comes down to one very simple and important factor - your essays, because they tell the adcom WHY you want to transfer. Yes, you need a high gpa and extra curriculars, but I think the reason you want to transfer is very important. I did not have a very good gpa but I had some kick ass essays or JHU and NYU (to which I was accepted) and I had decent extra curriculars. Basically, if you know you want to transfer, work really hard and give a good reason as to why you wan to transfer. As for applying for junior status, it is harder at some schools to get in, but I don't think JHU is one of them. But yes, applying for junior status will place much less weight on hs stats and SATs then for sophomore status. However, if you do well enough your first year and get involved, you should apply earlier because it gives you the most time to enjoy all that the school has to offer. And there have been many CCers with crappy hs records but sparkling college grades that have gotten into top schools. It all comes down to how well you do in your college and WHY you want to transfer.

is this a good reason for explaining a bad hs record and a reason for transfer?

In high school I became involved in hardcore scientific research at RPI. I was so interested and involved in performing the research that I was doing that I overlooked my responsibilities in school. However my sacrifice was not in vain, because I have designed an inhibitor that can stop cholera (a deadly disease) and it has been published in one of Europe's most prestigeous scientific journals. I hope to transfer into your esteemed institution because I would like to further my research horizons with the great oppertunities available at JHU (and then talk about the specifics).

Since I am not in college yet do you guys think that JHU will accept that as an excuse for my hs record? If I prove to them that I have a really good college record with significant research involvement that could work right (in addition to ec's, recs, and the other stuff...)?
